What is the recomended amount of trany fluid for a 350 turbo? I have a feeling the dip stick is not the right one and the trany is overfull. Should the fluid level be checked while the car is running or shut down while hot? I have a slight leak from the tail shaft and was told by a friend that it might have too much fluid in it. I was thinking of draining it and replacing the fluid with the right amount and then see what the reading is on the stick.

most all 350's are worn out . notorious for leaking. drop the pan and mark the dipstick just below pan level and refill. most will drain back from the converter and overfill the pan and leak from the filler tube. always check hot right after running it and check while running.

On these older 350s should anything be added to the fluid?

yep. add a 200r4 seriously you will never stop a 350 from leaking . the hard parts in it are worn out. lip seals cant do their job so fluid migrates thu the box and overfills the pan. only hope is to get a good seal on the pan, filler tube, kick down and shift sleave.

Stock 350 THM's hold about 10 1/2 quarts w/ a stock torque converter and cooler from bone dry. The fluid level is checked w/ the trans. warm and the engine running,on a level surface. Normal level is at or just above the trans. pan's mounting flange. Removing the dip stick and tube and measuring down from the nub on the tube (just above the o-ring or boot if equipped)about 1 inch should get you close to the proper level.Transfer this measurement to the stick itself and file a new mark into it.Put a new o-ring on the tube w/ some grease and reinstall it. There are lots of different tubes and sticks but the level on most GM trans is about the same-At or just above the pan flange. The rear seal leak needs a new seal and possibly a new bushing in the tail housing.Check the driveshaft yoke also for any scoring.Another big leak area is the speedo adapter located in the tail housing.

Shine, I was thinking along the same lines with a 200R4 because the 200 is the same size as the 350THM. I would like a little lower first gear for some more bottom end as the 700R would give me. However the 700 is different in size and would require some additional work on mounts and drive shaft. I guess I could always change the rear gears instead of the 700.

If your leaking at the rear seal have the bushing and seal changed, end of problem. Make sure the yoke on the driveshaft is clean, no rust or dirt. If your leaking at the speedo there is a seal on the inside of the housing were your cable hooks up, change that and check the shaft on the gear for wear. 10 to 101/2 quarts bone dry and 4 on an oil change with a regular pan.

One thing to keep in mind. 10 1/2 quarts is including the converter and that is if it has a drain plug. Also consider if the pan is a little deeper than stock. It may take 11 quarts. The rear seal is easy to pop out and tap in a new one. Cost- a few bucks. Rebuild cost me 475.00 .

How difficult is it to change to a 200r4? I suffer from the leaky 350 too! No matter how I seal it, there is a puddle in the next couple of days. Thought it was me until Shine mentioned about the convertor leaking back down.............CR

Quite a job changing from a 350 to a 200 4R. Trans mount is quite a bit further back, needs a TV cable and set-up for carb and a slew of other things to make it work ok. It's a good choice for a new build as it's smaller in girth and can perform real well. I prefer them myself as 1st gear is lower than even the 700's,yet you have the overdrive.Converter drainback is usually the result of a worn pump bushing and or converter hub.Any leaks that show up come from a bad seal or gasket somewhere that will normally leak anyway if only from driving(you may not notice it)or from sitting. When the converter drains back into the sump, raising the fluid level,it can get up to the leaky culprit which is often blamed on the pan gasket as it's the lowest part on the trans.More often it is some other such as the filler tube o-ring .The pump also has a gasket and a o-ring besides the seal and is often overlooked,it getting hard and brittle.

I understood the 200 is the same size as the 350 and the mounts are the only thing that needs to be changed besides the standard stuff. I won't be doing it myself so whatever needs to be done will be done but my understanding is it should not be that big a deal. I might be wrong.

piece of cake. i use lokar cable because the cheap stock one will not hold . the 200 sets in the 400 hole so you need to adjust your xmember for that. 1 ign hot wire and an aod shifter.

I have a chassis engineering 350 turbo mount, will it work or does anyone sell a mount to fit? Sounds like the perfect winter job for mine. Can you get a higher stall for a 200?..........CR

Gotta add this note for some that may not know. The 200 and the 200-4R are two different trannys. While the 200 will fit in place of the 350,it is a lousey trans! (no overdrive and probably the worst GM built)and it uses a TV cable to the carb that is critical to it's operation. The 200-4R also uses a TV cable that is also critical but is a better trans w/ Overdrive . It is longer ,will take the same yoke and needs diff.filler etc. Street andStrip of Summit's internet site used to have pics and measurements of the GM trannys. Also to consider is the application of the torque converter clutch lock up found on all GM's OD units.
