I have a MII front end with about 6000 miles on it. It has started to develop a terrible squeek when you turn the wheels. More pronounced when turning to the left and from a stop/slow speed. Do I need to grease this thing or what?? Unit is about 3-4 years old.

Oh yeah -- it is a manual rack & pinion set up

I got under the car and had the Queen turn the wheel (I have a Quik Lift) just this evening and it definitely is coming from the rack & pinion. I wonder if there is any grease in it at all. Sure sounds dry, but with only 6K miles it shouldn't need service yet.

Frank, its time for a little detective work:

squeak sources: wheel bearing, brake pads, caliper to rim clearance, ball joint, spring pad.

Brake pad: squeak will be on straight or turn, but should let up once brake pedal is released

wheel bearing: will be more pronounced in a corner due to side pressure, can be detected by jacking car and spinning wheel

ball joint: will make noise when turning steering wheel, should be no noise if you make a consistent circle on flat ground without turning steering wheel.

caliper to rim: usually will be a chirp chirp, as high spot hits caliper

spring pad: will squeak as car goes up and down during corner, lean

good luck, keep us posted

Do the outer tie rod ends have a grease fitting? If not you might want to install some greaseable units...

Of course I always look for some crazy difficult answer whenever I have a problem on the car -- and it is usually something simple. The squeek sure sounded like it was coming from the rack & pinion but in the end it was in the steering linkage. A couple of shots with some silicon spray lube and no more squeek --- at least for now. Thanks for the help.
