Dumb queation No.47. What's the easiest way to find Top Dead Center on an engine that doesn't yet have power and doesn't have any timing marks on the Harmonic Balancer?

TAKE THE VALVE COVER OFF FOR STARTERS ,,,,,,,,,,THE ONLY WAY I KNOW OF,, PUT UR MARK IN THE BALANCER WITH A TIMING TAPE OR A DIE GRINDER ,,,, OL BEAR,, I LIKE DAS IDEA ,, R THE HEADS OFF??
Stuff yer little finger in the hole and have Dale turn the motor over with a ratchet at the crank. When ya feel the pressure push on ter pinkie, should B TDC
Put a pencil (eraser end in) You'll feel the top of the pistion.
Pull off the valve cover and turn the motor slowly, watch the rocker arms for cyl 1, when the intake closes and just before the exhaust opens is about as close as you'll get.
Still driving the wife's car, cause I am slow.

Thanks guys. That's about what I thought. Just wanted to know if anybody and some other fool proof method. Once I've got TDC, I guess I should put a timing sticker on the balancer and a pointer.
This is probably late but way I've seen is to put a piston stop in the # 1 plug hole and turn crank by hand til it stops. Put a mark on crank balancer and turn crank in opposite direction til it stopsagain. Again put a mark on the the balancer and split the distance between the two marks- that's the true TDC. A light hit with a sharp chisel will make it permanent. A piston stop is a tool that is made up of a threaded piece( an old hollowed out spark plug can be used)with a bolt threaded into it. Automotive Engineering or a good engine builder can furnish more info on it as they use one to degree cams and balancers etc. A timing tape can be purchased also to put on the balancer after locating TDC
