By the time that you show up at a Goodguys show on saturday morning that all of the "winning" cars already have been chosen? It just seems odd to me.....

it's not about the cars anymore bill. it's just about marketing.

SPONSORS PRODUCTS GO A LONG WAY WITH THE CALIBER OF CARS BUILT FOR A GOODGUYS SHOW ,BILLETT,LOKAR JUST TO NAME A COUPLE ,, I PERSONALY THINK THEY PREFER THE GUYS THAT COME FOR ALL 3 DAYS ,, OL BEAR
I NEVER NOTICED THAT BUT I DO KNOW OF SOME CARS BEING PICKED ON SUNDAY MORNING IN THE DES MOINES IOWA SHOW. I JUST ENJOY BEING AT THE SHOW WITH OVER 2 TO 3 THOUSAND CARS.
Yeah, I've noticed too. It never bothered me because I could care less about getting a trophy. I guess if I built a $250,000 car with the intention of collecting trophies and wasn't winning, I'd be bothered by it. I just like meeting people, looking at cars, and getting ideas.
Yea ,you have to go for the fun of it all and not the trophys.I've had guys parked next to me leave when they found there were no awards ,just an informal cruise-in show. But for the most part it's the BS'n and such that draws us there.NSRA shows are the same way.Cars in the winners circle get nit-picked by all and have to have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested.Mine's to drive and I enjoy looking at all the others.
Last time I went to Charlotte that happened. Friday was a nasty day, rained off and on. Infield was less than 50% full. Saturday was sunny and decent and most of the winners had already been identified. There were a few that got chosen on Saturday and maybe Sunday. I don't go for the trophies so it didn't really bother me, but I do think it unfair to those who might come in later in event.
I do know one person who didn't go to the Goodguys event at Hershey unitl Sunday and still ended up with an award. His was a consistent award winning, drop dead gorgeous custom 53 Chevy. So I know they do hold back on some of the awards unitl Sunday AM.
However, on the whole, I prefer shows where there are no awards, like the Turkey Run.
One of my Dads cars got picked a few years ago at The Goodguys nats in Columbus- He was actually taking a guy a test ride in it that was wanting to buy it- Another guy yelled at him- stopped him- walked around the car quickly and handed him all the stuff needed to get in the awards on sunday- It was just a fluke-- Nothing "political" about it- he didnt know anyone important or the guy that picked his car- The guy just said he "LIKED IT" Anyway my point is with 4-5k cars at one place its more about luck and being at the right place at the right time. I have never went to win an award anyhow so I am never disapointed. lol
Trophies! They give away trophies? I never got no trophy! Oh yeh, I don't have a car on the road yet. I usually leave when they start presenting those things. All I want is for somebody to come up to me and say "nice car". I just go to the shows to have fun with other folks who are havin fun. Get too serious and it ain't fun anymore!
I used to be involved with the host club for several GGs events and they often asked us to help pick cars for awards. They instructed us to pick cars appropriate for the award, pick what we "liked", and not be concerned about who owned it or how perfect it was. They never said anything but we avoided picking any of our friends cars or cars that were previously awarded. Sunday picks are often alternates for people that were previously awarded but couldn't stay for the ceremony on Sunday. I never got the feeling there was any "politics" or favors when it came to awards. Maybe it's different for the big "____of the Year" awards.
Bill, I have been a Goodguys member for a long time and but only attend maybe 1 or 2 shows a year. I have always found that you had to have a turn key car worth a lot of bucks or be a memebr of the local club who helps put on the show. I was shocked when at the All American Get Together in March which was their first show of the year I won "Righteous Roadster". The weather was bad with light rain on Saturday so i did not want to do an hours drive in it. Sunday it cleared up and I made the drive getting there around 8:30. I walked away from the rod after wipeing it down and came back an hour later to find a card inside it saying I had won an award! BOY was I shocked to say the least. My thinking was if your not there on Saturday don't go on Sunday thinking you will win anything. There can be 2,000 cars on Saturday and only 1,000 on Sunday as people who do not win leave. Me I was just going to see all the cars and show off the 34 after a winter rebuild, WOW.
Now as to my current problem of the clutch being out on the roadster, I could not get it on a lift till next Tuesday and will let everyone know what I find out the. I do want to say Thanks to everyone for their input!
Best trophy I ever recieved, was a thumbs up, from a 5 year old kid, as I was leaving a car show. Never will forget it. Makes all those long garage events worth it.
Hey Jaybird, I didn't know you'd been out west to a car show! That's what my kids do everytime they see a rod or custom! That's 22 little thumbs and 4 big ones from Victoria and I!
I love seeing the reactions when my kids give 'em thumbs up! Nearly every one of them gets a big smile and waves back!
I think the awards just get in the way of the fun. The biggest grin i've seen lately was on Sunday evening when we were parked at the local cruise spot, My 2 year old grandson was playing in the wife's 38 Chev.... A Dodge Superbird pulled in and parked beside us, my grandson stuck his head out and said " Nice Coupe" Even though it was a muscle car and not a coupe the owner just laughed and grinned, saying thanks.
To me the reaction is worth a hundred trophies any day.
Still driving the wife's car, cause I am slow.

There are plenty trophy hunters in the world. Nothing better than bringing a beater into a show and park it next to some guy's 100k jewel. Now thats Americana.
I went to the nursery to get 2 plants and a bag of compost in my roadster today. Picked up at least 15 trophies on the round trip as well. Beautiful day. Yeah, I have a trunk.
I'm X38 on any other sites.

I NEVER GO TO A SHOW PLANNING TO WIN ANYTHING WHAT WITH A 30 YEAR OLD PAINT JOB,NO CARPET.INCOMPLETE INTERIOR,ETC. BUT IN THE YEAR AND A HALF WE'VE HAD THIS, WE'VE RECEIVED TWO TOP 30'S AND A TOP 50. IT'S A NEAT FEELING AND SOMEWHAT HUMBLING TO GET RECOGNIZED BY FELLOW RODDERS FOR YOUR EFFORTS WITH ALL THOSE BEAUTIFUL CARS THAT ARE SO PERFECT. EACH TIME MY WIFE HAS A NOTICED AN AWARD WINNER STICKER ON THE WINDSHIELD THE FIRST COMMENT OUTTA ME IS "YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING !!" BUT I HAVE TO ADMIT I'M SMILING FOR THE REST OF THE DAY.
Bill....same as always. The hopefull winners are there Thursday. Selection is always Friday so they can be displayed Saturday. Our "trophy" is just being there with a bunch of great people with neat cars.
Say hi to Charlie Holzclaw and Jerry Burge for me. Jim said it........see ya at 35th Nats East this week !!!!!
