With all the upgrades in our cars today (A/C, amps, power windows etc) it's hard for a generator to keep up. I would change it. Keep in mind you will have to change the mount too. Go to Radio Shack and pick up some #8 wire that they use on amps and run it from the alternator to the selonoid.

easiest way is to convert to a GM 1 wire alternator. Just unhook your generator and tape the wire separately. Install the alternator and run a 8 or 10 gauge wire to the starter soleniod terminal that has the battery cable from the battery from the large post on back of the alternator. Bing go you're done. Next step is to install a volt meter as your amp meter won't handle the out put of an alternator. It's really not that big of a job.

Once you change over to a 1 wire alternator, you wont need the big voltage regulator, 99% of them already are internally regulated. Keep in mind you might also have to change the ignition if its hooked with old points. At least I would, HEI all the way- carefree.

I've put alternators on both my 56 Fords, Just leave the regulator where it is and use it for a junction point. Your car has A/C so use the Allen Grove bracket kit, Vintage air is a dealer. The kit puts a rear port Sanden compressor down where the generator would be and puts the alternator above it in front of the cylinder head, that leaves plenty of room for the power steering pump. Most people don't even realise the car has A/C until they see the under dash unit inside. (Do you have any pictures under the hood, I love my Ranch wagon and my Victoria)
