Can someone explain the idea of fixing the timing to a pre-determined number and not allow it to vary? What I am talking about is instaling a distributor without mechanical, electrical, or vacuum advance--setting it to 30 degrees, and calling that good. I figured there must be a reason for the vacuum advance and the mechanical on the older units and the new units are electronically controlled.

I can't get it through my head how doing without is any good

First problem I see is getting the engine to start w/ 30deg adv.,second is living w/ the detonation that would follow under most throttle positions. A ECM controlled eng. uses the constant timing (Crank orCam sensor)only as a reference ,I believe , to make its own varied coil firings based on various inputs eg. MAP,O2,Knock sens.TPS,etc. I'm no eng tech but that should be the jist of it.
