LT1 running rough???

1996 LT1 with a 4L60E trans (set up by Street & Performance) out of a 1996 Impala SS. The engine has 9500 original miles on it.

Here's the problem.....start it up, hit the highway and cruise at 65 mph (190 degrees). Smooth and responsive until coming to a stop. After idling in traffic or at a light for 30 seconds or more it starts to run rough as though starved for gas. Temperature remains at 190. After parking for a few hours where everything cools down it runs great again until the first idle/stop situation.

I suspected moisture in the fuel but no amount of Sea-Foam/Heet with fresh gas helps any. I next thought maybe fuel vaporizing in the fuel lines somewhere but cannot find any lines running close to the exhaust system.

It runs so good otherwise that I cannot believe that it is an electrical problem as suggested by a GM mechanic. He also suggested that I check the injectors. Why, I asked, as it runs smooth until that first stop (remember, it doesn't start acting up until the first stop, no mater what the distance it has been driven). It will idle all day on my driveway and never miss a beat. And, even with the gas prices where they are, I took it on a 30 mile test drive and it ran great until I got off the interstate. Once again it atarted running rough. I managed to get it back on the interstate to head home and had to "nurse" it the full 30 miles back.

Anybody else ever run into this? Suggestions or ideas will be much appreciated.

it sounds like a electrical problem, if it starts to miss or tries to backfire after taking off from a stop, i would guess throttle positioner is bad.

i would think it is heat related. when you come off the hwy the heat always spikes so it should richen up some . i think cause i dont know diddly about injection but i do know what effect coming down off hwy cruse does as far as temp. probably a sensor .

That's exactly what it's doing, ties to backfire. Throttle positioner, huh? Where would I look for it? I'm like Crazyhorse, I don't know diddly about injection. Now if it was a flathead.......

If it is popping and cracking it is likely a fuel pressure problem. Could be a regulator problem. Call street and performance - they have been very helpful to us before on a FI problem.

throttle positioner is opposite side where throttle hooks to fuel injection ,little black box, as you give it gas it tell computer how much spark and gas to give to injectors

OK, first have you pulled the codes? Second, look at your tailpipes and see if one side is running rich (very black). If one side indicates this you have a bad O2 sensor. What is happening is that when you first start it, it is in the choke or rich mode until the O2 sensors hit 600 degrees and then it goes into closed loop. One side is not seeing this so it stays in the rich mode (also limp home mode) and fouls the plugs on that side. You don't notice it at speed but when you come to a stop the plug starts to misfire. Pull a plug on each bank and see if any are fouled. Happened to me once and the junk S & P harness would not light the check engine light.

I had a problem similar to that on a 96 Corvette that I owned. Would run ok down the road but when I stoped would act up. It seemed that it was running very lean and would backfire and have no power. What i found was there was a sensor mounted near the water pump that would moniter the temp of the coolant and tell the computer to go rich or lean accordingly. I cleaned up the connection and that fixed it.

Thank you all for taking the time to share your knowledge and giving me a whole lot of insight on fuel injection. This gives me a good starting point as soon as I locate and identify everything. As you have probably guessed, the LT1 is not in the '35, which I built using a good old Edelbrock. I traded away a perfectly good carburated car for a '40 that has the LT1. Time to start thinking computers, sensors, throttle positioners, etc. Never too old to learn I guess. Actually I have no choice.... unless I want to disconnect the brakes and put it up on jack stands.

Call Mark at Street & Performance and he'll walk you through the diagnostics tests needed to figure out your problem. He's very patient and helpful in trouble shooting problems with his systems. Like Willys33 said, you'll need to pull the codes and parameters from your system to pin point the problem .You'll need someone with the test equipment to do this, it's a GM system that uses pretty common testers. I had problems with my S&P EFI and he was very helpful and patient in figuring it out.

I have has this happen on a couple of LT-1s. It ended up being the optispark distributor coil You have to replace the whole thing which involves removing the water pump to get to it. It would run perfectly when cold and after it warmed up it would surge at idle and gennerally run like crap.

I had a very similar thing to happen to me one year at Louisville. Mark sent 2 guys across the street to the motel to figure out what was wrong. It was the throttle position sensor. Got one from them & fixed it. Only charged for PARTS!! Again, only charged for parts. S & P got my bussiness from that day on!!!!!!!! Super nice people.

Have a look at your fuel injection computer module(s). Some are known to cause rough idle & limp home if they get a bit hot.

Alot of good suggestions, another thing that is quick and easy to check is the EGR valve. It won't operate until the engine is warm, and if they stick open even a little, you will get a rough idle and low speed driveability problems.

Ted.........9500 miles on a 12 year old engine? When injected engines sit, the injectors will schelac up, Even thought is drives out OK, they may be dribbling at idle. What do the plugs say?
