I need some help to remove the door glass in my '30 5 window coupe. I have removed the regulator and the felt strips that run down each side of the window. I also removed the brace that runs vertically up and down thst has the window down stop rivited to it. The metal strip is still on the bottom of the glass window. I can slide the window all the way up and down by hand but cannot see how to get it out. Do I have to remove the metal strip from the bottom of the glass first? Does it come out thru the window opening or out thru the inside bottom of the door? Any help would be appreciated.

remove the top piece of the window frame and the glass will come straight out the top of the door. Just 2 small screws are all that hold that piece hope this helps. RED

I think Red's right. My 29 has a removable piece at the top of the door that is held on with a couple screws right on top. Remove that top piece and the glass with bottom track should be able to pull right out the top.

Thanks Red and Bob,

Glass is out and doors are ready to go to the stripper. I am redoing the entire coupe with a body off. I have another question that you all might be able to help with but this one is a little hard to explain, but let me try. My coupe is a1930 5 window and it was streetrodded about 15 years ago. I didn't do it but I have had it about 3 years. It has a front sun visor and soft top (roof) insert. Since I am completely disassembling the whole car, I have removed the vinyl roof and aluminum trim (Hidem) and the sun visor. I want to put them both back on after painting. The sun visor was nailed (brads) to the wooden header above the windshield and the vinyl roof was over top of the visor and brads. In addition to the brads that hold the sun visor to the header. there are a series of slots the sun visor that run the entire length of the visor. These slots are intended (I Think) to be used to tack the vinyl and the new trim (Hidem) to the header. The problem is that header does not extend far enough forward to allow for tacking the new vinyl or Hydem trim. The visor itself extends over the header and there is plenty of room to nail the visor to the header. When I removed the metal piece that covers the header under the visor, see attached pic, I could see the nails intended to hold the aluminum trim missed the wood header completely. They were in between the metal piece and the wood header. The header seems to be installed correctly and there is no way to move the header further forward so the it would extend under the slots in the visor. Been trying to figure out a way to add wood to the front of the header. Have any of you guys run into this?

Can't help ya on this one. The sun visor on my 29 attaches differently than the 30/31's. Maybe Eric (31tudor) or one of the other 30/31 owners can help or provide a photo. The 28/29 was pretty simple, but also allowed water to enter between the top of the windshield and the sun visor. Henry changed things in 1930.

Denny, My aluminum trim was only attached on each end with two stainless revets. The visor was nailed with brads and the vinyl top was tacked just so the trim covered the tacks . I did replace with all new wood, but not sure how far it comes out. I will fit the visor tonite and let you know tomorrow. I was wondering if it is best to install the visor and peice under it before shooting color? Now , I am not sure if the top has to go on first.
The soda blast guy finished the car this morning. He sold me something called "hold tight" to wash the car down before shooting to eliminate any residue.

Frank,

Normally, the visor is put on BEFORE the top. My visor has slots the full length of the visor. The slots are used to tack the vinyl to the header AND to nail your front trip strip all the way across the front. If there is no wood under the slots, you can't do that. Does your front trim wrap all the way down to the Gutter on both sides? Mine does. Since there is no wood header to nail the visor to in this area, I am thinking of welding it to the body in this area. That would mean I would have to install the visor prior to painting.

I will e mail you a couple of pics tonight to show you what I have here.

you may have a header piece someone has replaced in the car. Years ago alot of people tried to make their own wood kit and missed a few pieces. If you don't have the trim nailed down you take a chance on the fabric roof swelling up when you go down the road, this will stretch the vinyl and cause it to look loose. IF you have too add a piece of wood so the trim and top gets nailed down had to do this in the past with some wood kits. Hope this helps RED

Thanks Red. I am working to extend the header a little bit. The angles and radii on this piece is unbeliveable and I am a woodworker with a cabinet shop full of woodworking tools Also, there is a garnish that goes under the windshield frame and covers the header under the visor. Mine was cut to match the inside radius of the visor and attached to the header with very tiny wood screws. See picture. Do you know how this piece was originally attached to the header?

I think it was either tacked or screwed on the outside. Then there are larger screws on the inside going into the header also.

Does this "garnish" touch your visor? Mine does not. It is about 1/4" from the visor. I am going to add to mine, then weld it to the visor.

No it does not touch the visor. As you can see by the picture, the previous owner attempted to trim the garnish to match the inside radius of the visor. It is not a nice even radius and you could actually see the wood header between the visor and the top of the garnish. He painted the wood on the header black to make it less noticable. Since I have to extend the wood header anyway, I have made an oak piece to cover this "crack". I plan to install the garnish and sandwich the top of it between the header and my new wood piece. This will serve two purposes. 1) Hold the top of the garnish, and 2) Extend my wood header providing enough wood to attach the vinyl roof and fron trim piece over the tacks that hold the vinyl roof. I'll just have to paint the new wood piece the same color as the car. Don't like that idea but don't know what else to do.

Extend the garnish until it touches the visor. Tack weld it to the visor, then seal it with seam sealer. That is what I am thinking anyway.
