OK,I would like some opinions. I have gotten all the hoses for the air cond. hooked up. I have evap. for 134 gas. My Sanyo compressor has the R12 fittings so I got fittings to change it to 134. Do I need to change the oil in the compressor? It has never been used. It is the R12 style and has that oil in it. How does one go about removing the oil? I have a vac.pump to use. Do I remove the low pressure installation fitting,or can the bolt about 2" in front of the fittings be removed? Thanks for any input. Pat

If you don't know what's in it I would assume it's not compatable with 134a. Go to an auto parts place and ask for a synthetic oil that will work with any refrigerant and mix with whatever oil residue remains in the compresor after you drain it out.

OK How is the prescribed way to empty the oil out? Ok,I'm awake now. It is a Sanden unit, not Sanyo. Guess I watch my Sanyo TV too much. Thanks again,Pat

You need what they call "pag oil". It's used on 134A systems. I think I remember a chart in aie cond catalogs that tell which pag oil is used in certain make compessors. I believe there is about 3 types of oil? Can't quite recall but if you cal Vintage air and tell'em what you have they will tell you. The synthetic stuff sound like it might be the way to go?

To drain it just position the open inlet and outlet ports down (have the compresor off the car) and turn the compressor of by hand a few times, it does't need to be perfect just use an oil that compatable with everthing. If the system has been used before it's best replace the dryer but I've seen guys just ad a few oz. of synthetic oil and do the conversion to 134A without changing anything and to my surprise the systems have usually operated trouble free for years.

jdboes is right. On my 46 Ford convertible, I replaced the R12 with 134 with only changing the servicing ports. It worked for for years that way.

Thanks guys. It is nice to know that in this day with the way things are so screwed up in this world that there are still people to help you out. I had a call from Scott at Hot Rod Air and he explained everything. Even after I admitted that I had no parts purchased from his company. It's nice to know there are still good people around. Thanks for the call Scott.

Now, what do you guys say we figure out a way to stop the oil companies. Gasahol here is $3.80 and I'm sure it costs more elsewhere. My air should work when I'm done if I just had the gas to use it.LOL
