Hey guys, I'm new here. Just a quick question. I'm about to put new chrome headers on my t-bucket. Any creative ideas to prevent the discolorization/turning blue? I heard a story about a biker actually coating his new chrome exhaust inside with gear lube before install/starting it for the first time. Supposed to be a smokey mess BUT rumor has it the coating created inside helps that chrome finish stay nice. Anyone heard of (or tried) this? Any other ideas? I know that I tried Blue Away on the old headers that were blueing and that was a waste of time and money, so I thought maybe PREVENTION for the new ones would be better. THANKS! Dan

Like the Ole Porch Dog said --- If it's fat it'll BLUE right away.

On old trick to keep em clean is ---

Fire it up for about 10 seconds -Shut it down

Then soak a clean rag in lemon juice - and wipe em down

A lot of the blue will go away ---For a while.

theres a product called kreem that we use on the bikes we build. we use it on every set of pipes we install.its a 3 part process and it runs about 90.00 to do a harley and thats 2 pipes. so it is costly. but if you use it sparingly you could get by with 2 packs. there is 3 bottles to a pack. 1 acid ,1 neutturlizer 1 coatiing. but its money well spent.go to any bike shop they can fix you up.DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF OIL BASED PRODUCT. its heat that turns them colors so dont let the engine run lean or rich. it has to be tuned right or they will turn in about 5 minutes.good luck ken

i forgot to tell you. they will turn blue after a while anyway but kreem will slow it down a long time if used right. when they do turn blue there is a product called blue away works good. keep them clean and use semichrome on them and they will be good for AWHILE. I have used these 3 products for many years and they do work. when a customer spends 500. or more for 2 pipes he wants his moneys worth of pretty. so i use the kreem install the pipes and sell them the blueaway and semichrome. most of my customers are big fellas so i want them happy! lol. and i do agree with crazyhorse!!!!!!!!!!

I have heard to get them plated without copper. That's what I've heard, no proof.

Most guys in the know would agree that the best prevention is a properly tuned motor. Too rich or too lean and you'll discolor your chrome headers more than normal. Even if you've got it dialed in pretty good you can expect some blueing. Cleaning, degreasing, and polishing before firing the motor helps.

Check out Moorepowercoatings web site. They have a ceramic coating they cal ceramichrome that looks as good as chrome. I just got my headers back from them and they look great! They give you a written five year warranty and if you call them , they will tell you what turns them color. I have heard the chrome used today is not high -quality enough to take the heat. You will like the site and the people are great to deal with.

if you want shiny permanent headers buy stainless steel. i know of nothing else that will hold up to exhaust.

I have always poured oil inside, sloshed around, set them upside down so oil would sit in first bend for a few days. Sure, much smoke initially. Blue tubes mean lean jetting. read the plugs.

See ya at 35th Nats East.

my experience is its not the chrome that turns colors, its what is on the chrome, so keep them clean, never wax them and put nothing on them ever, because wax, polish and finger prints all turn colors, not the chrome!
