Seen a few discussions regarding clear powder coating on wheels, but has anyone had this done? Bonspeed offers this on their wheels but havent heard pros/cons from anyone....

Hi Matt, not on a wheel. I built a tilt snowmobile trailer for my daughter, took the frame in and had it powercoated with a clear coat added. After 9 years of sitting outside, the clear is begining to flake off. I don't think she ever washed the trailer so a set of wheels that get normal care might last longer. Assume her trailer is worst case. I would not be afraid to have wheels done that way and in the same light, I don't think they would need it on a hot rod where above normal care is given.

thanks ray. Did it "yellow" or turn cloudy?

It was cloudy and flaked off. Guy was a pro and I have used his services for many years in a related business with no complaints. One factor may be that the powercoating I chose was a granite effect (looked like the frame was hewn out of rock) and that coating was not as smooth as normal paint. I later had him do a set of vintique wheels, chrome outers with yellow centers; they are now owned by someone else and still look new.

OEM does it all the time, Ok for a driver but it can't out shine a well maintained polished wheel . My wifes new corvette looks great but my 10 year old truck is starting to have some issues that I can't just polish away.

Matt, almost every wheel I've coated has been cleared too (some powders even require it to maintain UV stability). Yellowing can also occur -- immediately, rather than over time -- when the powder is cured at excessive temperatures or for too long.

These FatBoy rims were done in a color called Alien Silver with a clear topcoat. (Sorry -- my camera isn't the best so the detail could be better.)
