Hi. I am trying to mount the fenders on my 37 Ford Tudor. The drivers side went on great. My problem is with the passengers side. I measured from the door jam to the back edge of the fender on the drivers side (good side) it comes in at 2 7/8". I then hung the passengers side (bad side). That came back as 3 1/4". The bolt holes are elongated up and down on the inner fender. I need to go back and forth. Also the inner on the good side was in perfect shape. The one on the bad side wasn't. Should I get a new inner for the passengers side?? I need help.. Thanks.. Al

It's hard to understand your problem. What's wrong with the passenger side inner fender panel?

I'd suggest you assemble the front sheet metal off of the car. Fasten each fender to its inner panel. Then fasten these two assemblies to the grille. Add the bar that ties the inner panels together behind the grille. Add the plate at the bottom of the grill that has the two big holes for the horns. These pieces should all fit one another easily. If they don't, you should be able to see why. Once this is all together try to fit the whole thing onto the car. If it fits OK but holes don't line up, make new holes. If it doesn't fit, you should be able to see why. Let us know how it goes.

Well i took the fenders off, and striped it down to the inner fenders. I mounted both on the frame rails. There was still a big dent in one of the inners. I pounded it out, and straighted it up. Still had to do some tweaking in order to get the grill to fit. After the grill was fitted. I put the hood on. I do have new Bob Drake hinges for it. The hood is on, and ajusted. The line is off a little. It looks kind of twisted. the radiator wasn't sitting right either. I had to put in a 3/4" spacer under one of the feet in order for it to sit right. About the only thing that fits real good is the hood support.. Al

Not sure exactly what your looking for help with other than overall fit of the front sheetmetal.... and well.... its a bitch.

My father and I have about 90 hours in fitting the front sheetmetal on an original 37 Ford. It really can be a frustrating task. Make sure body is mounted properly, shimmed accordingly and door gaps are perfect. Move forward from there, starting with fenders and inners. Mount grille, then hood. You may have to pull the chin of the grille in towards the front crossmember, this will greatly effect the hoods lines in relationship to the grill and hood sides. We had to weld some material on the hood to make the lines tighter near the hood and really massage near the cowl area.

We are developing a hood bracing kit that will really help in this process and remedy the flimsy hood deal. Also, if you have a cheap import grille, hang it on the wall and find an original... you will need all the help you can get.

Take your time, feel free to call the shop if you need any more info, I will try to help, we have another sedan in the shop soon.

Thanks,

Mike K.

Also, hope those springs settle ALOT when you drop the engine and trans in, otherwise you will have to give that some attention as well.

Another thing to consider, did the 37's cowl have the lower portions patched and repaired, as they usually do? If that was done incorrectly, it my come back to haunt you in this fitting process.

Thanks. I may do that. The guy who owned it before me used to move the frame around with a forklift. I think he may have screwed up the frame horn on the passengers side. I had to put a 1/2" spacer under the foot on that side in order to raise that side to clear the grill. I got my grill off ebay. it is in kind of tough shape, but I should be able to weld in some washers in place. I understand the hood issue. There is a previous weld in one spot on the hood. About the only thing that works real well under there is the hood prop. The body was off the frame. I went threw Bob drake for pads and bolts. The engine, and trans are already in the car. There was a problem that I ran into when I was lowering the body to the frame. I ended up making my own firewall using 18 gauge sheetmetal. I think the front frame horn on the passengers side was screwed up by using that forklift to move it around.. Al
