I am in Arkansas. I've heard that some southern states didn't require a title on these old cars when they were making them. (just got a pink slip) Then, sometime later, they started issuing titles to these cars but the "VIN" they "issued" did'nt match what's actually on the car. This is the case I think with my car. I have a clear title (Arkansas) in my grandfathers name with a VIN that does not match the VIN plate on the car. they pretty much are not even close.

Does anyone know why or how this could happen? The title I have has a released lein from the local bank. I also have old copies of vehicle inspections that indicate the VIN on the title. HELP PLEASE! Any info out there for me?! What do I do?

Update... I just went down to the DMV this morning and long story short, I signed a couple of documents and I now have a current registration with the correct VIN and I'll have a title in the mail in couple of weeks with the correct VIN and my name on it. All it took was a couple of hours and some phone calls... "whew"

And NO, gramps wasnt a car thief...

Chris, I had the same problem with my car. Original title had the engine s/n as the vin. Engine wss long gone. After several weeks of harrassment, State issued a new VIN plate and new title. No more problems. Glad yours worked out well.

the early chevys used the # off the engine block not the body # which was what u were more than likely lookin at. but u got it fixed i guess. most of todays DOT people do not know about the old iron.

Dixie.......GM engine numbers did not match the VIN until 1955.
Chris....the 4x4 plate on the firewall is not the VIN, it is the production line info plate.
Title Guy said it.

thanks guys... yeah I knew the fire wall plate wasnt where the VIN was to be located. on my car it's actually on the passenger side door opening on the A-pillar. and I've also been told that it's stamped on the frame but I didnt look.

Don't think some of the GM's engine ID matched the VIN til late 60's. At least all the pre 68 Chevies that I had didn't match--I know th tri-fives don't
