Gary here's how I used to prep and maintain high build varnish on a marine finish [Boat]. First seal wood with thinned epoxy resin [West System] ,so it can penetrate, then full coat of unthinned resin. Sand then build up with single stage clear coats of two part urathane finishes of your choice. Marine people use Algrip, but can use PPG ect... dont wast your time with hardware store finishes they dont hold up for crap. If your wood sees a lot of sunlight just freshenup every year with a scuff and another coat. Lots more to it ,e-mail and I can go into full details. Or call Me. Ken
