I have been hang around here for about a year now gathering information on hot rods. My first thought was to just build the rod of my dreams. Yes, I have most of the skills and tools needed to complete the project. However, the resigtartion concerns and frankly the timeline to build it have convinced me that I need to be looking for someone,s nice driver. I recognize that it won't be my perfect dream car. Now that I have been able to sell one of my race cars. I have the room in the garage and a reasonable nest egg to start looking for that special car...a full fendered '33 or '34 Ford chopped 3 window coupe.



A question I have is should I stay away from cars the are running Ford flatheads? I would say that what I know enough about that type of engine is just enough to fill a thumble. I am much better with more modern small block engines .



Another question concerns what exactly should I be looking for when I actually go and "kick the tires"? I know that I need to look closely at fit and fininsh.

Brant you love this stuff don't you! Maybe you should get a conversion dictionary. I have heard there are some on the net but not looked at one. OK, we spell tires tyres (it's English), center centre (same reason), color colour (ditto), liter litre (it's a Euro word so we spell it that way) etc etc. We also have a lot of dual words like petrol station and gas station. Although petrol is the more common word, both have been interchangeable since day dot. BUT over the last 20 years, LPG (liquid petroleum gas, an oil producing by product) has become very popular as it was always cheaper than "gas" had 100+ octane and was good on the polution side. You guys call it propane. So gas and gas have become a little confusing, especially for younger folk. The LPG isn't as cheap as it once was and the octane is dropping also because (I'm told) the LPG we got as a result of our oil mining ("natural gas") is now a man made product and doesn't have the same kick. Why, I have no idea. Although we now export huge amounts of industrial grade natural gas to China. To help them make carr parts and everything else I presume.

Oh yeah, there's also aluninium and aluminum, which we also make a lot of. We just call it ally.

CK...If it take a year to find the right car i am perpared to do just that. I have no intentions of buying something that I can't live with and immediately start a rebuild project.



jdstokes...Shameless plug. I sent you an e-mail throught this site asking some questions about the car. I am going to guess that it didn't get to you? But I do like the car. The wife isn't to fond of the red...but I don't think that the color is a deal breaker with her.



slopper...I have this soft spot in my heart for old British cars. So your using the Queen's english isn't a problem and won't require an interpeter.



shine...I have a relative who live in Teaxs. So your drawl isn't a problem either. Thanks for the paint buff out tip.



brianangus...Canadians are easy to understand as long as they aren't from Quebec Provence, Eh.

Thanks for the comments and tips. I should of said that I am very familar with "StreetBeasts"...I almost bought into their package. At a discount of course. But forunately my better and smarter half stopped me for very sound reasons. Those guys are still calling me some 20 months after I talked to them and told them the deal wasn't for me. It must have been the "new guy" questions I was asking.



So other than the cool factor...running a flathead as a driver might not be the best choice.



I have built race cars and have enjoyed all the work involved. But I have also quickly learned that the smarter choice is to buy someone's well built piece of hardware and improve it. Although there is that "I built this myself" factor. I am just not sure I want to deal with the Califonia DMV.

I did read those articles with great intrest and it almost changed my mind about building it myself....almost. I even have a '34 coupe title...no car but a title.

You know guys there are many great rod shops advertising on StreetRodding.com. Support the site.....use one of them on your next build....we have plenty of great sponsoring shops in almost every state....hint..

A few things come to mind:





  1. When looking at cars (specifically 33-34 chopped 3-windows) make sure you're not looking at a Street Beast. Or if you are, at least learn the difference between those and 'other' rods. You can usually buy them cheap because the owners are dissatisfied with them. Don't want to open a can of worms here because a few guys who love their Street Beasts stop by here now and then. I'm just saying make an educated decision.


  2. There's nothing wrong with a flathead. In my opinion they're way cooler than a small block Chevy, BUT: they're expensive to build and repair, they run hot, and they don't have NEAR the power that a SBC does. To get serious power out of one (250 hp?) it will be stroked & blown and you'll likely be over $10,000 just for the motor, and expect it to be tempermental. What does it take to get 250 hp out of a SBC? Nothin. If you're familiar with the SBC (or SBF) then you may get a lot more enjoyment out of something you know how to fix and tune. Just my opinion.


  3. If you have realized (and can admit) that you'd be better off buying a completed car you're smarter than guys like me. I should have bought a finished car 6 years ago when I bought my non-running car. If I had, it would have been paid off and I would have been able to drive and enjoy it for the last 6 years. However, I do get the privilige of saying "I built it" when it's done.


  4. Talk to some of the guys on here about buying versus building a car. Don Schneidt will convince you in about 30 seconds that you'd be crazy (like me) to build a car. Very, very good point of view that even guys like me who insist on building their own step back and say, "Well I shoulda just bought one to begin with!" He builds VERY nice cars and they're certainly reasonably priced. (I've seen several and have gone for rides.) And if you're lookin' for a 33-34, with Don's screen name being da34guy how could you possibly go wrong?

Bob, I was in the same situation as you. I decided to purchase someone elses hotrod with just about everything I was looking for in it. Took me about a year to find. You will always have things you want to change , add, or would have done different to the car. That gives you enough things to do to keep you occuppied and you can still go out right away and enjoy the car. Worked for me. CK

If ya get any lazyer after ya sell the Nova keep me in mind, I build 8 - 10 32,33,34's a year most guys out there can't build one for what I sell em for. It's called buying power on parts.Ya can imagine the price break I get when I call and order 5 Chassis at 1 time, same with bodies, drivelines etc. These are quality cars, not the junk that comin out of Kansas and missouri.

Few thoughts:



1. I look at the idea of buying a finished car like a house. Someone built it to suit them, so you'll very very rarely find something exactly how you'd like it. So, factor into an appealing deal what you might like to do to "renovate it" to get it just how you'd want it. This could be simple like new wheels and tyres or more complicated like re jigging the suspension to get it to sit right or even retrimming it. In any case, the $ to get it to where YOU want it have to be considered, just like a house.



2. Flatheads aren't so bad if they're prepped and built properly, they're just a bit gutless if you're used to later SB standards.



3. I read that stuff in Street Rodder. Different from how we do it, but not hard really. Just a pain in the butt going through the processes. Possibly sounds worse than it is. Clubs and/or other people who've been through it would be a help. In the very special interest area of hot rods, I found long ago that calling the "department of whatever" pen pushers for information gets you "by the book" obstacles rather than good solutions.



4. I'm always lerry of not finished projects because I don't trust the work that's been done. I'd hate to discover a frame warped by welding or suspension out of whack, not to mention bad things hiden under primer or shiny paint. You can get lucky though and not all 1/2 finished projects are stuff-ups.



As said, just thoughts.
