I'm wondering if putting the convertor back on will cause extra strain that will affect the starter again.my 37 used to crank over really easy when we were just turning the engine over by itself. When it was all together is when I had starter problems!

The joys of street rodding. Sometimes finding the problem is really rewarding, other times it is expensive.

from what i can tell..the trans inside was worn out?..clutch bans....which would bind up the starter..more later..

I'm not following this. Is the noise comming from the trans or the starter? I've never heard of a bad trans keeping a car from starting.

Sounds likely that the torgue converter was not seated into the end of the crank pilot hole correctly, possibly some rust or junk there stopping it from going all the way in .That will cause the flywheel to flex out of shape(flex plate) when the TC bolts are tightened.Crank hole and pilot on Tc should be cleaned good befor install, and after install but before bolts are put in Tc should move freely and mate to flywheel. One other note there ,if eng. had a stick shift before there will be a pilot bearing or bushing in the crank that will need to be removed.Transmission can be siezed up tight and long as the TC is not granaded there should be no reason for the trans to cause a starter problem.

The pilot bushing is the only thing that makes sense here. If the engine had a manual trans attached to it and it was left in. That could jam the convertor up into the pump gears tighter than they should or warp the flywheel when you tighten the convertor up.

Or possible play in starter..My buddy had a '33 Ford Cpe. that had a 396ci chevy b.b. and he fought it for the lonest time. He said the play in starter was the problem. He had put 3 different P. M starters on, had a problem with to much play, and not working right. He went and got another brand starter, and end of problem. This guy was a machinest, and told P. M. at SRNats in Louiseville about it. and even showed them. Must have had a rookie doing work on them.

Bryant, make sure you check the back of the crank for a pilot bushing when you have the 400 out. Also check carefully for any cracks in the flex plate, especially around the bolt holes.
