I just completed the repair and paint touch up on the race car. I followed Shine's method of back taping from the "paint on" thread. I am using a PPG polyurethane solid color paint...no clear coat. Most of the mask line is pretty well hidden and won't take much if any work to make it disappear. However I have two mask lines that run down the middle of the panel, which are about 6 to 8 inches in length, that I would like to blended and buffed out.

I finished painting on Sunday and I was going to let it sit until this weekend before I tried to do anything with the paint. First I was going to wash the body panel to removed some sanding dust in the nooks and crannies of the unrepaired part of the panel. Then I was going to wet sand using 2000 grit to remove the tape ridge. Then I was going to buff using a light compound ( Meguire's Final Cut) with a wool pad. Then wax and polish. Is this right?

I am after improving the 5/50 (5 feet or 50 mph) paint job that I have right now and to get some practice on something that it won't matter if I mess up.

dont use the wool pad. it cuts pretty fast and deep. wear out that 2000 paper until it looks polished. then use a foam pad at LOW speed and it should ploish up fine. just remember on repairs you dont have 3 or 4 coats of clear. the back tape line will polish out fast.i shave the tape line with a razor blade to get rid of the edge but it's kinda tricky. you have to rub it on your jeans to sorta curl the edge up so it wont dig in. wait a while before you wax it. let it cure out all the way.
