Frontends and rearends Need some ideas

I have a 1933 dodge 4 door sedan that I would like to street rod and I assume that I need to start with the frontend and rearend componets?


What I have to work with.........

* solid stock frame

* I'm thinking of a 318 engine

* This would be a everyday driver

* Nothing to radical on the engine {would like to travel from state to state

*suggestions What differences would I encounter if I go with a Mustang II front or use my stock straight axle with the updated brake set up ?

* What type of rearend would I consider?


I have had this car since 1973, I ran it orignal for about 5 of those years and started complete disasemble about 20 years ago and then was put on the back burner going thru lifes ups and downs. Now I'm on a mission to complete my dream. I'm a green horn when it comes to the drive train up dates. I have alot of experience on restoring orginal equipment on past restores. I would like to read all of your inputs Good and bad ones.

just be careful who you buy from. theres a bunch of copy cat junk out there made with cheap steel being sold . buy from a major supplier or go direct. the mll is the most copied set up out there.

I have a MII in 34 ply 4 door. I kept the stock suspention in the rear with a ford 9 inch. There are some 8 inch that will bolt right in, I don't know witch ones. If you are going to do a lot of traveling you have the car for it. My wife has a bad back and says my car dose't bother her a bit. It rides like a new one and has lots of room. You will really enjoy the car. Good luck. P.S. I think the straight axle will be kind of harsh, I've only rode in them, never ownd one.

nice heavy frame, easy to work with, like these guy's say, go for a brand name suspension package designed to fit your frame. The rear leaf springs should work fine, might need to be de-arched a bit to get the stance. put in a set of new style rear shock brackets and shocks. That 318 should be fine too.

If you don't already have the 318, take a look at a 340 or 360. Much more available and you spend the same on a rebuild with end result of more power and similar gas milage. Later if you need more scoot - easier to add to 340-360.


Friends Dad had 33 Dodge 4dr in Farmington, NM. 4 big guys used to go to lunch in style with the big Dodge. You will like it.

I have a 34 Plymouth 2 door with a Progressive Automotive MII IFS and an 81 Vetter IRS with the transverse composite spring. Not a bad ride, not a real good one either. Comfort quotient reduced by a 4" chop. A 4 door should be much more comfortable especially for passengers. A firiend has one with a 360 and it is a great cruiser. His isn't chopped.

Check out Fat Man Fabrications. I have his front suspension, a mII, and his rear suspension. I am extremely satisfied with both. Have had the front mII for 18 years, no problems.

Everthing fit as it was supposed to. No surprises and a reasonable price.

Had a 33 Plymouth PD coupe with a Mustang ll and Nova rear end. It was one of the better driving streetrods I've owned. If you go with a M II forget the junk yard stuff. Go with a Heidts or Fatmans.

ive got a 360 out of a 75 dodge rv with get this 55000 original miles 2barrel carb with electric distributer really clean engine

A friend of mine has a 33 Plymoutn 4dr, Fatman's front, posies spring on rear with a 9". Rode horrible until he put the right length shocks in the rear, after he realized that was the problem. Since then it's a great riding car with a ton of miles. He's got the standard 350/350 combo for a drive train. Great car!

Brian..did a '34 Plymouth all-door back in '78. Removed 2 shortest leaves, reversed main leaf, AMC disc brakes, Vega box, Maverick rear. Drove it to Nats South in Winston Salem. Met Tom Artuci. He and Bob Fetrone had just debuted a new kit for Mustang 2/Pinto. Got back to Maryland after almost 500 miles on the axel.......ordered MII kit from Tom. Picked it up at Nats East in Timonium = goodbye axels, hello independent front suspension.
TCI, Total Cost Involved MII kit is my favorite since 1980.

Just remembered another.....big '34 Nash Brougham = fuel crunch time, '62 Cutlass aluminum odd-fire V-6, Powerglide. Removed 2 shortest leaves, reversed eyes, Saganaw box. New maroon paint, new mohair interior, new chrome...luxorod time. Sold it, guy drove it to Atlanta where he got busted in a drug sting. DEA ended up with it.

Shine...right on Brent's (Fat Man) IFS. Crossmember is the only 360 degree steel out there. Back in the day, Brent used too thin a guage metal for top had....clinch bolts allowed A arm to slip. Special Tee bolts had a shoulder deeper than plate. He did correct problem and did a recall. Fat Man is a great rodder.

I seem to remember someone bad mouthing Fat Man Fabs a while back. I have nothing but good things to say about him and his business! I've had numerous conversations with him when having a rear suspension made. He was always pleasant and extremely helpful. I would recomend his product to anyone. He is always refining his front ends and the other equipment he manufactures. A true professional.......CR

I had a 34 Ply.and it had a Fat Man front susp.and 8" rear and all worked great with no problems at all with align.I agree with others on 340 eng.
