I too have a Goldwing, a 2003 model. I intend to ride it whenever possible this year. I get some flak from my Harley riding buddies, but that comes with the territory. 37 mpg is not real great for a motorcycle, but the comfort and power make up for it. Stay safe....
Been driving my economy car - 2001 Caddy Deville - 20 to 23 MPG. Much better than my pick up at 12MPG or my box van at 8 MPG. But I still prefer to drive the 33 roadster regardless of the MPG
I've got two Gold Wings, both 1975's one in Antares red and the other is turquoise. Both are Vetter dressers and both still run great at 33 years. Early morning or evening riding is about it. Years ago I used to ride to work 9 months out of the year, but with today's speeds on the interstate (85+) I need a little more protection then engine case guards. Too many cars and nuts on the road today, the risk ain't worth the extra 10 mpg.
Sometimes when we pull up to a Gold Wing they ask us to shut those Harley's down so they can hear their radio's! Love my Harley, but I've driven a wing, power, quiet, comfortable you can't beat them. I'm useing the Harley more now and it helps with $..ride safe!
This year the Fatboy is going to get some mileage. Last year I hardly got out on it and no long trips. Next week it'll get a quick 400 miles on it. "Go fast and take a lot of chances"
I used to ride a lot and miss it sometimes. I gave it up after I lost one too many friends. I know people that have lost feet, an arm, a leg, and their lives because of people in cars. Last one was my wifes uncle who fell off his new Goldwing last August. He tore the ligaments in his left arm out of his spine and now has a dead unusable appendage dangling from the side of his body. He doesn't even remember the accident. People don't see motorcylces-they aren't looking for them. I hate to rain on the parade here, but I for one will stick with my vette.
BigR, if I lived where you are, I'd probably stil be riding alot more. We got some beautiful places to ride up here, but the major roads are death traps. Maybe when we move down we can do some two-wheeling. I'm sure I will still have the Wings by then. Did you get a new Wing? I like 'em, but they are pricey. Trade your Merc for it?
Yea eric I agree!! Thanks For the compliment. I really liked the looks of your bike too. I am sure you will back on two wheels again when you get some of the rugrats out huh??Do they make an 11 seat side car? Anyway -I have been thinking about parting with my bike since I had a close friend get seriously hurt on his a few weeks ago- Hard to give it up but I dont want to be in his shape either.
I always rode with the mentality that EVERYONE was out to kill me. Knock on wood, but I never had a close call. Knew my time was coming though, too many riders just like me that hadn't had a close call for years then outta nowhere....
yea thats what got to me- My buddy always rode safe- never sped or rode over his head- and a dog ran out in front of him. He went down avoiding it and broke about everyhting that is Breakable on his body.Incluiding his Skull- Luckily he did survive although it was touch and go for awhile , and looks to make a full recovery but it will be years if he ever does get back to normal. He has rode a bike all of his life and is in his mid fifties- You never know.
Was riding with a buddy in Missouri down Hwy 13 and he hit a deer while riding his Yamaha 650 twin. He didn't go down, but the bike was really banged up and he was black and blue from his chest up. The deer rund oft I thought all three of us were dead.
I had several accidents involving road rash back when I was riding daily. Once had to lay one down to avoid T-boning a little old lady who pulled out into traffic. Said she didn't see me until the bike and I hit her door. ;-) The worse one required an ambulance and 60 stitches across my forehead. Head first into a wire rope. Also needed a new bike frame, forks and engine parts after that one. Took only two days to rebuild the bike (Z 1) but took about two months to get back on it. Had a new appreciation of the word "caution" afterwards.
