I need to replace the exhaust system on the 34. I want to go 2-1/4" stainless but not sure which mufflers to use to get a deep street rod sound and good performance. It was suggested I use Hushpower mufflers or Borla mufflers. I have a 350 under 300 HP. Is this a good set up?

tommy if room and space allow i would use the 40 series flow masters . i have in the past and love the sound of them . they sound great if you have a little decent cam set up also . you can get them at a great price also . they run around 80.00 dollars each and the case is not going to rust . good luck bob

i use dynomax ultrafow welded mufflers on everything. they sound like a flowmaster at idle, low rpms, but quiet out to a very tolerable level at highway speeds for a pleasant long trip. they run about the same price as the flowmaster from summit racing.

you run 2 1/4 and you'll kill the bottom end. i do 2 in for customers under protest but my own will be 2 in into muffler 1 7/8 out.

I'm running flowmaster super 40s also, 2-1/2 exhaust, 454 crate motor and mild race cam. Nice sound, but have to turn radio up real loud. Flowmaster rep warned me.

Tommy-I chose MagnaFlow stainless steel mufflers to go long with the stainless pipes and really like the sound of them. Shine is spot-on about the 2 1/4 " though. It hurts the low end performance.

In the first place Choo Choo doesn't have a race car. I believe he's more interested in sound then low end performance. Go with Flowmastre 40's.

I think I'm going to go with Shine on this one. 2" in and 1 7/8 out. Considering I don't have a rocket I need all the bottom end I can get. Still trying to decide on the muffler.

93 $4.019 or $1.00475 a qt. The prices keep going up that's how I will start buying my gas. It sounds better that way.

ForVette, Which Magnaflows did you go with? I heard from an exhaust shop in my area that some of the Borla mufflers split a seam. I don't know how true that is but I would thik Borla would cover it.

MagnaFlow's are like 9" x 17" if I remember correctly and were about 80.00 each. Sounds real nice at idle and also at highway speed, not too bad but nice sound.

until you get to about 325 horse 1 7/8 work well. after that then i use 2 in. unless you plan to use the top end of rpm big pipes hurt more than they help.

Shine, does it matter much if the out pipe is 1-3/4" rather than 1-7/8" ?

if you cant find 1 7/8 then use 2 in. 1 3/4 is pushing it.

best bet is aluminised pipe 2 in then 1 7/8 out. if not then use 2 in all the way. the smaller pipes will help the low end .

Flowmasters have always been a bit much for me when at speed. They have a frequency in some cars about 60-65 where they drone real strong. If you want to hear them live, listen for the next modified Mustang to go past you, Mustang boys love Flowmasters. Borlas often are found on Corvettes, deeper sound - not as loud. Dyno-max is good muffler but not nearly as aggressive at idle. So, if you want the bad boy idle, go flowmasters but be ready to have your ears ring on long trips. On the pipe size, I would go with 2", bigger than that and you are kidding yourself.

I use Spintechs on all of my cars. They flow and sound better than flowmasters, but without that annoying drone. I put them on all of my cars. Just google Spintech and it'll come up. I think they are made by a company called Superior Metal Fabricators.

they sound like cheap glass packs and still have the drone. i would run turbos before i would pay big bucks for them.

i use flowmaster 40's but it depends on how your exhaust is ran. lloyd took the 40's off his coupe and put regular turbos on it. he was just tired of the hwy noise.

I had 40's on to start with but they were too noisy at hyway speed. (and I'm pretty deaf) I have 2 1/4 pipes all the way back- would I be better off with some type of restrictor in the muffler outlet or should the whole exhaust pipe be changed? ( would back pressure from a flow restrictor be enough) Also, what is best temp range for a sbc 350 with 345hp to run? Best thermostat 160 or 180 or 195? Here in NH we don't have all that much really hot weather to put up with, but don't want to be overheating.

i run 190 thermostats and try to keep it at 200. running 170 is killing a motor. i just like a little back pressure to help low end . try a set of smaller tips and see if it changes.

Got SpinTechs on mine, but don't yet know how they sound. Haven't fired it up yet, but everybody I've talked with says they have a great sound. They were also the only ones small enough to fit under my car.
