after we had our poll this is the average. most said 18 to 24 months. leon was right on with 9 to 12. cost of parts was all over the place. 25 to 40k .

on average i put 700 man hrs in a car at 55 dollars an hr. thats 38,500 in labor.there is a lot of 20 hr weeks in one too. curing time for paints. only time i do a 40 is when it is time to put it together and all parts are here. so 9 to 12 is normal.

on average i use around 25k in parts and supplies .

so thats 63,500 to build a nice driver. not too bad when you look at the cost of new cars and trucks.

most of the cars i have built are driven almost daily. one has 90k on it and was built in 96/97.

cost can really go up and down on labor because of the condition of the body and number of man hrs to replace panel and such. my media blast compressor runs on diesel so we know whats happing there. :(

maybe this will give somebody an idea of why it cost more to have one built instead of buying one. we cant build a car for 5k in labor or parts only.

and i used this truck as a guide .

takes time to run a farm 700 hrs is just about 4 1/2 to 5 months work if you hit it 40 every week. on average you can get between 20 and 30 maybe. then you have to deal with upholstery shop time which is usually 3 months.

Shine. If you put in +/- 700 hours in a car and you know what you're doin, imagine how many hours it takes someone like me who doesn't have the proper tools, doesn't know what he's doin, winds up doin a bunch of stuff over, and can only put in 3 hours a week! Little wonder I've been workin on my car for 6 years. Thanks for the post. It'll give folks something to think about when they start bitchin about costs. You just aint gona get a Riddler award winner for 35K are ya?
