I'm getting a set of BFG Radial T/A's and they have raised white letters. Does anyone have any suggestions for blacking out the white letters? It's a high boy so turning the tires around won't work for the front tires. Thanks. Dan

A year or two ago there was an article in Street Rod Builder detailing how to remove (sand/grind off) all of the raised lettering on tires. The pics of the finished product were pretty nice. If you search their tech archive on the web site you should be able to find it. Black permanent marker will work for a while also.

The article that Franke is referring to tells you to DA the letters with 80 grit until they're almost gone, then DA with 220 grit until you're happy. Wipe down with lacquer thinner and you're done.

I might recommend you mount the tire on a wheel you don't care about before doing this. And do it somewhere that you don't want black rubber crap all over the place... like somebody else's garage, LOL.

Permanet black marker , like a sharpie will work. I've heard of grinding off the letters, but I wonder if that would effect the balance of the tire since the weights are measured in grams or oz. I used a black sharpie 4 years ago on my B.F.G. ta's and there still black.

Even if you grind off the letters, the white will still be there. Black marker or black tire paint will still be necessary.

Any reason you are not buying tires without the raised white letters?

Oh that is a shame....when I used to have to buy white walls I would just turn them inside out, is that an option? I mean you could still black them out but you would not even have the raised letters that way.

They are going on a high boy so they'll still show on the front. The raised letters don't bother me but I don't like the white outline.

Have them on my highboy, there is a blackout paint for tires just paint over the letters and have the tires mounted with the letters facing in.

Regarding tire black paint and stove black paint., do you have the brand name and the name of the store where purchased? I've looked in numerous hardware stores and auto parts and couldn't find anything that would work? Thanks.

A long time ago (and I'm not gonna admit how long) we used to use a product called Tire Black, which I think was made by Dupont. We got it at Pep Boys. Don't know if it still exists or not. Worked like a charm!

I remember the name Tire Black. Went to Pep Boys today and no luck. Went to Ace Hardware and the closest they had to Stove Black is Rustoleum BBQ High Temp Black. It's also listed for use on stoves.

Thanks. There's a bunch of old dried up bottles on eBay!

I called Coker and Tire Rack and got "we don't know"

On the HAMB there's posts on how to paint white walls on blackwall tires. Some guy in Denmark or Greenland makes white wall paint.

Try a recap shop. They use some black paint on the tires to make the whole tire look new
