I've been thinking about buying a tig for the shop. It will be mainly for thin stuff, my mig is old and hard to weld thin stuff but is great for the heavy stuff. Is the tig the way to go? Is it better for patch panels and is the heat distortion signifiacntly less than gas or mig. I've used both a henrob and the mig with patch panels and got along ok but was not thrilled with the results.

I'll try to put together a sheetmetal tig welding tutorial for you. Maybe it'll help with the learning curve.

Consideration is over bought a Miller Syncrowave 180. I intended to get an Econotig but salesmen are salesmen. The local companies were priced the same as the internet dealers so I'm out the sales tax. The 180 is about $250 more but has more features mainly a wider amperage range. Included with the price are lessons and ongoing support my place or theirs.

The salesman is the same guy I bought my first mig from over 25 years ago. He owns what he sells and is the one giving the lessons. In fact all three of the guys in the office have been around that long. Always look for service.

Welder will be here in about a week and then the fun begins. Thanks for your input.

I have a Linclon Squarewave TIG, and have been very pleased with it's performance. If I used it more, I would consider putting a liquid-cooled torch on it, but the air-cooled torch is fine for no more than I use it.
