When I cranked the '36 after 2 1/2 years of re-do, I discovered that the harmonic balancer is rubbing on the rack. I had replaced the front with a ""Total Cost Involved" or rather had it done, and it was not discovered that they rubbed until last week.

QUESTION:? 1 ) CAN THE RACK BE LOWERED SLIGHTLY WITHOUT CAUSING STEERING AND ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS or 2) WILL I HAVE TO RAISE THE ENGINE THE NECESSARY AMOUNT? Which is the easiest and best (safest) thing to do. WOULD APPRECIATE SOME ADVICE. THANKS IN ADVANCE --SKEET


BY THE WAY I am doing great - have a way to go - but God has been good to me. Thanks for asking those of you who did. Just need to get my ride back on the street. Whew! it's been too long.

Skeet- How bad is the balancer hittin the rack?

If not much, build a 3/16 spacer for each motor mount-

lift motor and slip in spacers .

Shouldn't change the angle of the tranny output enuf to do any harm.

Don, It's touching it a but and the guy that is being my wrists for a while is afraid that it will rub a hole in the brand new rack. I can clearly hear it scrubbing against the balancer. So you think that raising the engine will be the thing to do?! I was just concerned about the alignment.

Give it a shot

But B4 you do -Check the angle of the output on the tailshaft

After the mod if it only changed by a couple degrees--U'l B ok

Thanks my friend. Just a question-is there no way to lower the rack a skosh? Probably a stupid question. Also, where is the most reasonable place to order VDO Classic guages (a six pack)? I have Heritage Gold on the '36 now and it just doesn't go.

Lowering the rack can lead to bump steer problems with the front end. The amount you need to raise the engine will depend on the type of motor mounts you have installed. With urethane mounts you can have the clearance as close as 1/4" or so, with factory style mounts, you should leave more room, as the engine moves around more with those style of mounts.

you can slice the rack mounts and reweld. it should roll the rack down a little without causing problems with the steering shaft.
