My street rod came to me with the 700R4 lockup wire disconnected. My mechanic noted this, and he connected the wire. Then the car would not shift into 4th gear at all. So, it was disconnected. 4th gear is back, but I don't believe I have a lockup in 4th. Two questions:

1. why would a builder set up a 700R like the one in my car with no lockup function? and

2. how to achieve lockup function? Will the Painless wiring vacuum switch (discussed recently) work in my situation? http://www.jegs.com/i/Painless/764/60109/10002/-1

(I am thinking not, as my trans doesn't seem to respond to the stock wiring.)

Attached is a pix of the wiring on my 700.

thanks, Ken

Ken that apears to be a neutral safety switch at your shift linkage. That has nothing to do with locking up the convertor.

i dont know who did it or what they did to it but a 700 without lock up is scary. i no longer use the 700 but i was always told it had to lock up or it would cause damage. am i right brian? i know a little about the 200 but had really bad luck with the 700 so i switched. on the 200 there is a plastic 4 pin plug on the side. the ign hot goes to the top left pin.

That would be correct. I have seen them run without the lock up feature but question why you wouldn't take advantage of that feature. Show me a picture of the right side of the trans so i can see if you have a early or a later model. Then I can let you know which route to go to cure the problem.

Brian, here's a pic, mostly from underneath. Is this sufficient? Trans likely purchased in 2002 if it was new equipment. Car was finished in 2003.

Brian,

See attached. The neutral safety switch is the item circled in blue, correct? What is the disconnected wire circled in red?

thanks, Ken

Ken what you have circled in blue is the neutral safety switch. What you have circled in red looks to be one of the wires from the lock up switch. If you look a little further back from the neutral safety switch, you will see a plastic four gang female switch. That is your switch for the lock up. It is very hard to see from the pictures where that wire is running to. If you go to www.bowtieoverdrives.com you can get a clear picture of this connector and also a wiring diagram of how it is wired. You may want to start from scratch with a wiring kit. It doesn't matter if it's from Ron Francis, Painless or Bowtie, they will all work fine. It is not a hard job to hook this up, just be patient. You create extra heat in the trans when you do not run the lock up. Heat is bad for automatics. If you have questions shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you my phone #

Brian,

I will check out the wiring diagrams at bowtieoverdrives.com and see if I can find where my red-circled wired originates. Many thanks for your help!

I have plenty of patience. I may still need to give you a call. best regards, Ken

MD8 is gm option code for 700r4 or 4l60 I have my trans wired to a relay that kills the power when I hit the brakes works great and have put this set up in 4 cars no problems. I use a kit from gm that I get the 4 pin connector out of it has only 1 wire out of the plug. I can get the wire diagram from my car if you need it.

it will be an ign hot. the brake lite switch should trigger a relay to unlock or they could have used a vac switch. sounds like you have an internal problem though. cant think of a reason for it not to shift. i'll check with mike at trick shift. he does a bunch of hp 700's.

Good news to report. Mike, a rodder I met last year at the Mother's Day Rod Run recommended a friend of his to look at my trans and Rick had time to look at it today after work. He worked on it for an hour and made some improvements. He confirmed the lead to the trans was 12 volts. When I told him that when the lead was connected to the trans, that I lost 4th gear, he found that pretty surprising. So did Bowtie Overdrive. They said my trans was "acting weird".
Rick drove the car and agreed it was not shifting quite right, i.e., lazy. He adjusted the TV cable, we drove it, but no better. Then he backed off the TV cable almost completely, as an experiment, and the car shifted much better, esp. under light throttle. The trans is not acting right. Rick will drop the pan and take a better look sometime in May, as he has 3 cars ahead of me. I'm fine with that. So, I am pleased with the progress today. Very relieved to find a knowledgable experienced mechanic with the 700.

Ken.....I always use a Ron Francis TC-70 converter lockup module. It is adjustable for the desired speed. Or you could get a Radio Shack 89 cent toggle .....a few months later, hello $1100 trans rebuild.
With no power to the converter, it will not lock up, but all gears should shift OK. The TV cable needs to be adjusted. Also, the TV cable MUST be actuated in the same arc as the original TPI. What carb do you have? I may have a spare adapter plate for the carb. If I don't, Fourth Gear has them.
Jim said it.
