I think a one man operation would take a minimum of a year. That would include time to dismantle, strip and repair. Then would be suspension rebuild, plumbing and drivetrain. if you are rebuilding the engine and tranny too, it would add, if not someone else would be doing that while you work on the chassis. Of course this includes downtime waiting for supplies and parts. I have a friend who does Cobra kit cars, it takes him 9 month's per car, and that is with hardly any bodywork.

I say about 1-2 years. The average hotrodder could never put in a steady/ dedicated 40 hours per week, plus the cash flow has to be there. Speaking from experience, I have gone from sittin with a big wallet to 6 months/ $20,000 later , almost flat broke and divorced ! hahah

At one point in my life I decided that I was going to build one car a year. Why? Just because it had a nice ring to it. I found that you can do it, if that is all you focus on. But there is more to life than building cars. So my answer would be, yes you can do it in one year if you want to, but taking a little more time makes it a lot easier and more fun.

And 3340 is right, newer cars can take a lot more time.

Has this guy ever done a full off before? I've found that it makes all the difference in the world...as you well know shine. If he's good......12 - 18 months...if not...who knows. We've got a "if he's not" in the shop now what a train wreck! Feel bad for the guy.

Actually, there isn't enough information to arrive at a conclusion. The amount of time involved would largely depend upon year and make plus condition at the start. Beyond that would it be a restoration or street rod project? All these issues make a difference in the amount of time needed to put the project on the street.

At about 5 hours a week its taken me 6 years to get my A-bone to the final assembly stage. Course I've done a bunch of things over and I don't have anything but simple tools in my garage. Paint is the only thing I farmed out. I suppose if I didn't have any other interests it'd be done by now, but after 6 years, I'm still havin a blast.

Man I don't want to touch this question ! If you set a deadline then all customers will want it done in the time period that was said! It would turn into a night mare and customers would say They did it on TV in a week !! LOL

How about doing it like the government thinks. One person can paint a closet in 1 hour, therefore 60 people can do it in 1 minute. Soooo, overhaulin' used to do one in one week with 20 people, therefor 1 person can do it in (1 x 20) 5 months. Foose worked nights too (at least a 16 hour day which is double the standard work day (remember this is government think) so double the 5 months to 10 months.

ONE MAN START TO FINISH- YOU WILL FIND VERY FEW PEOPLE CAPABLE OF DOING IT ALL. YOUR AVERAGE HOME BUILDER ALWAYS NEEDS HELP WITH CERTAIN PARTS OF THE BUILD. I COULD NOT BUILD ONE WITH OUT THE HELP OF MY FRIENDS. I DO BELIEVE IF YOU HAD THE MONEY AND ORDERED MOST ALL OF YOUR PARTS AND WAITED ON THE U.PS. MAN TO DELIVER YOU COULD BUILD A NICE OLDER STREET ROD IN 12 MONTHS BUT NOT WITOUT SOME SORT OF HELP.. WELL SHINE YOU HAVN'T POSTED YOUR TIME YET SO LETS SEE WHAT YOU THINK. - MY SH--TS NICE I DO IT TWICE

I think this post is really interesting, good one shine! my 37 came out of a field in WA. in oct, I was dead set and determined I was going to go down the road in may, when I'm on mission I want it to happen, my sweetie force fed me, god bless her, body off, all parts and piecies media blasted, frame boxed, create new pu box, wear out finger prints and all that stuff, I know you guys can relate, and I drove it down the road late may, too cool, I wanted some credabilty, so I entered a world of wheels show and my piece got 1st for street rod pu, 175 hours per month, nope, dawn till the last dog barked! so,, 2nd time around I think I can do it in 4 months, wishfull thinking maybe, thats my story, what say you guy's

i'm at 16 months on the 37 delivery, but the first month was tracking down some parts from donor cars for the structural stuff & it was really rough to start with. i'm about two weeks out from being ready to disassemble for paint, so not doing too bad timewise. throw in about 20 40's- 50's harleys , a 66 chev truck & a 32 roadster for paint during that time too. i would say that only concentrating on the one vehicle, 12-18 months should be enough time for a "field build".

Let's just say ya busted butt and did it in 10 months-

40 weeks @ 40 hrs per = 1600 hrs

At a very nominal shop rate of $50 per-- That's $80,000 in labor.

Then customers want you to bid the job?????

The labor + the cost of parts well exceeds the value of the vehicle!!!!

Hey Shine--Don't ya wish U could get 80K to do 1??

Still pretty much a "loaded" question with a '56 big window Chevy pickup without knowing the general condition of what is being taken on. However, in general I would think it could be done in 3 to 4 months depending upon the nature of workspace, the tools being adequate to do the job, abilities of the individual to do the project, and the lead time for body restoration components (yes there is that word, can't be totally avoided), suspension mods, engine machining/acquisition, transmission rebuilding, and whether or not a paint booth is on site, and of course interior. Time estimate in consideration of an 8 hour day being the criteria and the project being the sole time focus, no jacking around allowed. Of course all in the assumption adequate funds are available to handle the project from start to finish.

Understanding upholstery is not usually done by any rod shop or individual and is always outsourced it does have to do with the time frame for a project to be completed. If you wait until everything is ready for the upholstery to have someone start on that aspect of the project it's probably an automatic two to four week minimum add-on to the time for completion.

Experience and parts availability. Shine you or the rest of the experienced builders have teh advatage of "been there done that" which should speed things up. A shop equipped to do the build with out having to buy tools as you go. Then is it an odd rod or something that panels and parts are readily available for.Do you include your after hours thinkin' time and the time spent chasing parts? So many varibles.

1man,1 car, no distractions maybe 18 months. But what do I know it's five years and counting for me. I am easily distracted!

This is a trick question isn't it.
