Hi, new the the forum. Looking for some advice. I some how got suckered into painting my friends motorcycle and side car. Its about 26 pieces total. The bike was maroon (cringe) and the new color he chose was Pearl White (cringe), with blue rally stripes. I laid down a coat of PPG black base, followed by 3 coats of PPG off white base, 2 coats of pearl white, then 2 coats of DCU2021 clear. On the parts that got the stripes I only put one wet coat of clear. We let it set for 24 hours and then tapped off the stripes, scuffed the clear with scotch brite, cleaned then shot 2 coats of PPG pastel blue base. All looked good for about 5-10 minutes then it began to wrinkle. Now I'm at the point where I know I have to sand the stripes smooth but how do I prevent it from wrinkling again? I have flamed many rods using the same method and never had a problem...

my only guess is the clear coat was too thin and the blue base color was shot wet lifted it. i usually use at least 2 coats of intercoat clear. this is one of the reasons i stopped using ppg and dupont clears.

If you scuff any fresh clear and put reduced basecoat on top of it It will likely lift- You should have used a either a mid coat clear or not scuffed the clear. It would adhear if it hadnt been more the 24hrs.If you sand the clear you better let it cure a few days before re applying a base- I dont care what brand it is.

Are the stripes ONE SHOT? To stop the clear from wrinkling the ONE SHOT put a few drops of hardner in the ONE SHOT before adding the stripes. Allow a full day for the stripes to dry and then you can LIGHTLY mist the clear on with no reaction. Several mist coats later and let it harden then you can go after it with wet coat.

You dont sand the fresh clear on ppg. Like Dave said-it will screw up every time.

Thanks for all the input! I think you all hit it on the head. While scuffing of the clear did not help matters, Im pretty sure my biggest mistake was to wet of a coat. I should have used my smaller gun. I wet sanded the stripes back down and shot about 5 very light and dry coats and all went well. BTW - this whole job was a NIGHTMARE - and the worst part? I DIDN'T EVEN GET PAID.

That's the way it always goes.

If it's free U'll fight it

That's why I stopped doin FREE work years ago.

Hell, even when ya charge for it ya fight it sumtimes

When it comes to paintin, it seem like paint has a mind of it's own @ times

Even if ya do everything right.
