Big Al sittin back in paradise.

A friend has a 39 coupe with a vibration and they can't seem to find it. He said he checked the rearend, the driveshaft, u-joints,tranny, motor mounts, everything but couldn't find out what was causing it. Any ideas??? it's a sbc, auto, I told them to watch for this post so maybe we will get more information....

More information

It vibrates when your rolling. When your going down the road it

vibrates then calms down like when someone doesn't know how to steady

the gas pedal, up and down. When your sitting still the car vibrates

like it has a cam in it, which of course mine doesn't.

Where does the vibration feel likes it coming from . Does it come and go with speed or engine rpm . Does it go away with braking or get less ? The most common mistake in streetrods is the driveshaft angle being out of line more than 4 degrees

have you checked pinion and tranny angles? this link may help. Key point to remember is EQUAL but OPPOSITE angles (example 3deg DOWN on tranny 3 deg UP on pinion)

Is the angle checked with the car sitting level? Does the size of the tires have any impact ?

Dumb questions........When does the vibration occur? Vehicle running but sitting still or only while the vehicle is moving? If the latter is it more intense at any particular speed or does it become worse as speed increases?

this is checked at ride height wheels on the ground and level surface, a drive on lift would work too (where the tires are on a platform)

I have a vibration in my rod too. It seems to get worse when you decrease speed.

I was talking about a 37 chevy because Eriq said to keep our discussions to cars only......lol Seriously, it's really getting old . doesn't vibrate too bad while driving, but it gets worse on deceleration. I don't feel it thru the steering wheel so I don't believe it's the front end or alignment. It's a 350/350 combo. Far from stock too. At the moment it has a 430 / 9" rear ( I like to be the first one from the red lite !.....big grin) that soon will be changed. I had a smaller gear in it before and it still had the same vibration. Any help on this will be deeply appreciated.

vibration at a standstill is most likely the converter or cracked flex plate..

Or the wrong flex plate-like a 350 on a 400 or vice versa.

I'd be inclined to agree with Shine on the idea the problem is the torque converter. It's not at all uncommon for someone to get in a big rush in assembly and damage a brand new torque converter by virtually forcing it on to the transmission. B&M Torque converters are particularly sensitive to that type of treatment.

Like bigdude eluded to, it wouldn't happen to be a small block 400cid would it? They are externally balanced and if you get the wrong flex plate or harmonic balancer on it you will have problems.

unbolt the converter from the flex plate and slide it back. if vibration is still there it is engine problem. if it stops you know it is converter. wrong flex plate will be really obvious as it will raise all kinds of hell. the vibration will change with rpm sitting still. a cracked flex plate is pretty common if you bought after market.

I saw the engine running tonight and the water pump pully was out of round... do you think that would do it.... at idle I didn't notice any significant vibration...

I'd think a pulley being out of round would cause one heck of a vibration, not to mention shortening the life of the belt and water pump. Are you sure it is out of round and not just an optical illusion? If it is out of round by much it would be nearly impossible to keep the proper tension on the belt. You didn't mention if there is a serpentine belt or multiple V-belts involved. If a serpentine, the tensioner will not be long for this world if there is a pulley out of round, but then a tensioner would absorb an awful lot what might be a vibration with V-Belts.

I had a vibration problem with my 32 coupe.Had the angle checked, took out the drive shaft twice and sent it off for rebalancing, both times after this was done it still vibrated. My vibration was at 55mph and hardly any before that.Rebalance the tires but still had vibration.Fianlly had a friend come over who drag races,he measured the shaft and it was 1/4" too long in the tail shaft.Got a new drive shaft cut, problem solved.

al, please post the solution when you find the cause. i have two vehicles here that do the same thing. a "cyclic" vibration above 40-45 mph. one of mine has been highly modified as far as suspension & driveline, the other is bone stock with the exception of a 3.73 auburn pos. center section. both have new wheels & tires (properly balanced) & not an engine vibration, just seems to occur at steady cruising speeds.
