A friend of mine has a neat Lakes Modified "T" he built a few years ago. He used a 2.5 4 banger engine from a '80 Chev Monza. It has developed a knock. Due to several more pressing projects, he doesn't have time right now to rebuild the motor, so just wants to replace it with another motor. He found a low mileage rebuilt 2.5 4 cylinder from a '90 S10 pu. Does anyone know for sure whether this will interchange with the '80 Monza. All he can find on the internet is interchange manuals for sale.

Thanks.

It would seem to me that a simple phone call to a Chevy dealer's parts department or a salvage yard should do the trick. Also commercial engine re-manufacturer sites on the web might also provide the needed info.

Just keep in mind the question is at the short block level not for a complete engine. There would be sufficient differences over ten years which might eliminate the newer engine from being a direct swap into an older vehicle. Interchange manuals deal only with complete compatibility in describing an interchange in most cases.

Thanks for the response, but from past experience, dealer parts departments are not much help. The young guys who work there know how to look up a part for a specific application on the computer, but if it's not in the computer, they're lost.

The long block with head is all he's interested in, as he has non-stock carb and exhaust system for his "T". The motor mount location on the block and the bellhousing bolt pattern are the critical parts.

The engine re-manufacturing sites are a good idea to search. I'll pass it on to him.
