PULL THE STARTER OUT AND CHECK TO SEE WHAT THE PATTERN IS ,,JUST LIKE SETTING UP A REAR END GEAR ,, IF THE DRIVE GEAR ON THE STARTER SEEMS TO BE SETTING TO DEEP IN THE FLEXPLATE ,A SHIM OR TWO MAY HELP ,, WHILE YA HAVE IT OUT PUT SOME WHITE LITHIUM GREASE ON THE STARTER SHAFT ,, LES ,, AKA OL BEAR

I too had numerous issues. Took out one shim, then another and finally ended up with three 1/64 shims and it's good now. I thought it was okay when it had zero shims, but that only lasted a few days and it started acting up again.

You may want to check, the starter to flywheel clearance at the high point of starter tooth to flywheel should be 1/8", Hope this helps

get a 1/8 cotter pin, with the flywheel cover off the pin should just fit between the flywheel teeth and the shaft that the starter gear rides on. the shims are used to get his optimum fit. if your aftermarket starter has a slightly different web on the gear compared to stock you may have to increase that gap.

Go with a stock GM starter, GM also makes a mini starter if you need the room. I have had no luck with Powermaster starters.

i looked at a stock mine (reman) from advance auto...i thought powermaster was the best?..when i disconnect the hookup on the distributor (hot wire)..so it doesnt fire, turns over fine.(spins) and releases,,just when it FIRES,is were the problems start,

I had the same problem but i was running an older 400 chevy. The older blocks ran standard starter bolts, newer style starters that most everyone is using these days are set up to use a metric bolt. There is just enough slop to cause a problem. I tapped the block and instlled new metric bolts and have had the starter on for about 3 years now. I drive the tires off the car.

I had the same problem with a powermaster on and off for a couple of years. It started tearing up the teeth on the flywheel. Changed the flywheel once then it happened again! Against my better judgement I took the car to a local Speed shop/ garage and told him my situation. He kept the car and drilled and tapped a center hole in the starter. My starter has the staggered bolt holes. It seems the starter was flexing just a little bit. I could see it when you tried to turn the motor over. Never had that problem again and I've been putting starters on this small block for years. I've tried them all too. Factory chevy's ,Delco's, and a number of others. Might be worth a try!!! Or you can use OL Bear's windex technology..(grin)

prost56, My block only had the staggered bolt holes. I wish it had both because the inline starters are a lot cheaper! I definitely had the correct bolts in mine. It also broke two of them off. All I know is the third bolt solved all of my problems, and it's been a little over a year now. I struggled with Starters for a lot of years before the last fix. As you know every time you take a street rod somewhere you will always draw a few lookers, and it seemed that every time my starter would grind and make all kinds of noises. Nothing more embarrassing. I'm sure this post will draw a lot of criticism, but all I know is that it worked! You can put all the shims you want in Place but they never worked very long for me. Hope this info helps you....................CR

factory installed starters have a front bracket bolted to the starter case and attached to the block. That's what prevented the 'flexing' you guys encountered. Had a similar problem with my Chevy 468 until I put the bracket back on as the factory does. It doesn't move now
