Lost, but not forever.

I was just reminded of a story my Father-in-law told me before he passed away, about his days of funnin' around with cars and the like. (Sit back, she's a long story!) He had just moved into a new neighborhood somewhere in Connecticut. He hadn't been there very long when he was approached by his new next door neighbor who jokingly told him that in order for him to live there, he had to have an antique car. Soon after, he purchased an old Stauder-Dayton of some type and set it up at home and began to restore it. Much to the liking of his new Buddys around the area. Then, (in the late 50's ,I think) as it is today, it can be hard to find the parts you need to be able to repair and proceed with your project. That being said, He needed several things, one of which was a drivers side door. Well, during one of his motorcycle trips out to California, He met up with a friend and they started to tour back to Connecticut where his friend was just going to visit for a while and then return to California on his own. On their way back , they stopped at a swap meet, apparently somewhere in Tennessee. My father-in-law found a couple small things he needed including a door. He wasn't sure if it was the proper door for the car he had but he figured it was very close and that if it didn't fit ,maybe somehow he could modify it to work, so he strapped it onto his motorcycle and they both headed for home. When they finally arrived home, he said he had the door in his hands, stretched out in front of him as he approached the car, he walked up to the car, put the door in place, propping it up so it wouldn't fall over, stepped back and noticed that there was a dent in the door that lined up PERFECTLY with a dent on the main body of the car. As it turned out , The door he found, was the exact door that came off the car in the first place. He never did figure out how that door got all the way to Tennessee but he was sure glad he found it there. He said he went on, finnished the car and had lots of fun with his new Pals until he moved again and ended up selling it to one them. Funny how things like that happen. I love that story. |
