I have decided to swap the camshaft in my 33 cabriolet. It has a 300hp -350cid GM crate engine with a whopping 1500mi on it. It runs fine for me but I am wanting the lumpity sound and this one sounds like a sewing machine. My buddy contacted lunati cams for me and they have come up with a grind that is supposed to be the best of both worlds -meaning having the rough radical sound yet being drivable. I thought I would share the specs and see what some of the experts on here Thought of it. Keep in mind It is a 350th trans with no stall convertor, and I do want to keep this drivable. it is 477 lift 225 duration- 108 lobe seperation- again- not so much interested in performance as much as sound and drivability. And I will be changing the springs of course. thanks In advance for any help....

Dave I went with a 268 xe from comp-have had 2 cars with them. I too was looking for the big cam sound with a little drivability. Most people thought it sounded much bigger. I have had pretty good results from lunati except for them dropping the ball on my 460 ford engined 40.

Bigdude is right, that Extreme Energy cam profile is nice, even the 260 xe is a nice cam. Ive run that same Lunati cam and it is a good cam, just doesn't have enough vac, due to the tight 108 lobe sep. angle.

TIN....The brake guys always tell me that you need 16-18 with a booster. I know you can get by okay with less than that.

Roofcam is correct. I think you could operate power breaks at a little less. I have, and had no problems, they were just harder to work and took more foot power.

The advance issue, well usually it is hooked up at idle and they usually are from 5-20 or so inches of vac adjustable, or 10-15 or so fixed originally. In order to take full advantage of the advance unit, you would need at least as much at idle as it was intended to use. If your unit is a 15 incher, then you need a minimum of 15 inches at idle to take advantage of the unit.

Dave, unless you've changed out the engine on the 33, the one you bought it with was the $1400 four bolt main crate motor which I believe is in the 240 HP range. Check the numbers with Mortec. Thats a great motor on which the addition of a performance cam will add a lot. Go with the Comp Cam as BD suggersted including roller rockers. BTW, Chevrolet Parts Departments are again carrying the Engine Oil Supplement (EOS) but they now call it Assembly Lube.

Your right Gman I dug my paper work out on the motor and it is a 260 horse engine not the 300-as I said earlier- I should have known due to the non center bolt heads- But wasnt thinking- all these cars run together after awhile. Everyone talks highly of the comp cam so I am leaning towards that. Which specs actually make the cam have a rough idle- Some say it is the lift- others say the duration - While others say you can run more lift with less seperation etcc. What actually makes the thing sound good? Great advice on the rotella shine But I hear they have recently taken the zinc out of it also so I dont know how it would be on cam break in. I will defintly put some sort of additive in it to start- I hear lots of flat tappet cams are getting chewed up due to the loss of additives in todays oil.

Dave your right about the Rotella, they have reduced the zinc content for EPA reasons. On my 350 with the Comp Cam and roller rockers , I also had to go with tall valve covers as the rollers wouldn't clear the short covers. I don't believe the break in is that critical with roller rockers but I'd for sure use what ever additive the cam manufacturer recommends.

you can still buy rotella for older equipment. they make a new oil for newer trucks. i use it for break in on new engines. if not the comp additive is only 16 bucks. some cam failures are not due to oil but improper break in. i see folks fool around with one for an hour before getting it running right. first time i bust one off it runs for 15 min at 3k.

THE STOCK CONVERTERS CAN COME WITH A VARITEY OF STALL SPEEDS, DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU END UP CHANGEING THE CONVERTER. A HIGHER STALL WILL MOST LIKELY CUT YOUR mpg IF THE CAM DOESN'T.

Thanks A bunch guys !! You have talked me into a comp cam- I think I am gonna do the thumper- It is pretty similar to the lunati cut they were gonna sell me. I Forgot to mention that my car dont have power brakes so the vac shouldnt be a big issue- if the convertor dont work out I guess I will go there next . Might as well do it you only go around once I will let you all know how it turns out.

I had my sponsor (years ago) set my valves on the bench and they were too tight. Hubby always set them running and so he reset them running and brought the engine to life. Now I don't have to worry about it - I went solid and can set them myself with my bump switch and feeler gauges take the guess work right out of it! :-) Oh and just to put my vote in....I like Crane and husband is a Lunati roller guy. Glad to hear the excitement in your post Dave...take some video of the old girl coming to life and send it to us!

Well its ALIVE !!! WOW this thing really sounds good. we fired it up and tuned it in in the garage attached to the house-after we broke it in and set the valves-timing idle etc.. I went in the house and stuff had actually fell off the wall It really does thump.I was impressed but the other half not so thrilled with the new cam carnage. But I really like it and thank everyone for the input.I highly reccomend the thumpr series to anyone interested. I drove it around the block and it seems to have really woke it up. I will try to get a video posted soon.

I used the comp cams thumpr- its the new grind they come out with fairly recently. the specs were almost exact as the lunati I mentioned in the original post but the lobe seperation was 107. There are 3 different versions of the thumpr ( and yes thats the proper spelling) the thumpr- the mutha thumpr and the big mutha thumpr. I installed the smallest due to keeping it as drivable as possible. I am very satisfied so far. You can go to youtube and punch in comp coms thumpr and there is a video of a 350 chevy on a dyno with each of the different cams in the same engine to hear the difference in the idles. Very cool..
