Got the ragtop going this morning. so far so good. The p/s is a little jerky--not smooth turning form lock to lock. Seems better as rpm increase. it is a rebuilt unit 0 miles. belt is tight--fluid OK--reason for changing out was leak and no seals readily available. If I remember correctly when I got it, it was a little herky--attributed that to broken p/s bracket and loose belt. Didn't diagnos or drive too much as it was unsafe at the time. Should I just keep working it and hold it in the lock position hope to bleed air out or look elsewhere. Thanks

Mll's with sbc's are usually sensitive but not inherintly herky jerky. Usually a jerky system is due to binding in the steering shafts or u joints. Thats where I'd look. How many u joints do you have? Any Heim joints? The last herky jerky system I repaired with an installation of a Heim joint. Cobbled up steering set up's are way to dangerous to ignore.

Gman is right about the joints. Sometimes they are put on too deep on the shafts. Also run the steering back and forth quite a bit to get out any air in lines.

MII on my '37 Chevy started having morning sickness first. Jerky when cold and got better when everything warmed up. Worked that way for 1 whole summer, then came the leak, so had to replace it.

Jerkyness as opposed to binding in the linkage like gman stated and is accompanied by a growling noise is caused by air in the system. Like bigdude said most times just cycling the steering from lock to lock several times will take care of it, but if not you either have a leak somewhere in the system allowing air to get in, or have a restriction on the low preassure (suction) side of the pump causing the pump to cavitate. Just some food for thought...
