Why are rear ends (of CARS you sickos ;) ) measured from backing plates and mounting surfaces? I'm doing the preliminary planning for a SBC swap into the '41, which would include a TH350, new driveshaft and new rear end. I've looked at the list of rear end widths that's been posted here before 50chevy.freeservers.com/Suspension_Widths.html#REAR and can't really decipher what I want.

It says the '41 rear end is 54" to 55" wide, plus add between 4" and 8" for drums. So I'm thinking that the 54" to 55" is inside of backing plate to inside of backing plate, right? Adding the additional 4" to 8" would be the "mounting surface, right?

So I have a Camaro donor available with a running SBC, 4 speed, and 10 bolt rear. They say I can hear it run, but it's got a bad clutch so I can't drive it. I'm only interested in the motor and rear end... maybe the driveshaft too. The link above has no information on later Camaros.

I'll probably go with a Chassis Engineering kit when I do pull the trigger because it's so highly recommended. Plus, I can't for the LIFE of me find anyone else who has a rear kit. They make no mention of later Camaro's either.

Any recommendations?

I used the Chassis Engineering kit and it was great. It was a bolt-in and my Granada 8-inch bolted to that. Couldn't have been easier. Using the 8-inch rear gave me the same bolt pattern as the MustangII IFS. (spare tire consideration). At that time Posie was also makinmg a parallel rear spring kit. I recall that his was a weld-in but it got the car a bit lower.

I once put a 70 Camaro rear end in a 40 Plymouth. It went in without even having to change spring location.

Don: Hmmm.... 4 speed, I'll need some help hooking up the clutch linkage! No FE for me! This is a 1984 Camaro, not '94. Even if it is FE it'd be TBI and Edelbrock makes an intake to replace that I believe. Whatta ya think?

Frank, I like loooooow so maybe I'll check Posie's again. I looked them up a year ago and couldn't really find what I was looking for then. CE comes so highly recommended I'm thinking I'd be dumb NOT to use them! Tried and true, right?

Thanks Pat and hotrod39!

Eric... I have front and rear axle tech that I can email to you. Send your request to jimsnicecar@aol.com

Always measure from mounting flange to mounting flange. Not backing plate to backing plate...shoe/drum widths can vary.

Keep kroozen
