This Saturday is BilletProof at the Don Garlits Museum in Ocala, FL. No billet anything allowed. Especially wheels. No digital gauges, no IFS on fenderless cars. It's for rods and customs built the old way. You get the idea. This is the first annual. Should be good. Look for my '37 Police car. (I have no connection with the production of this event)

Big HAMB event. Would love to go, but would have to ditch my wheels. I guess I could get some water based paint and paint the wheels black. If it rains, I'd be escorted to the exit gate. LOL

Dixie, lock the hood down and go. Other than your engine your 32 would fit in pretty well. Only a one day event, you could probably dodge the traditionalists and the ratrodders for 6 or 8 hours. LOL

I would like to go but it's a long drive from Vermont for a one day event. I'm going to have one of each. My Ply. is the shiny one and the Buick is going to be in suead. No billet any thing. not even one the engine. I like both., and now I can go to any kind of show. Build-em at home, it's more fun that way.

Anything shiny and not chrome. Chrome is good, polished aluminum is not.

Billet means the part is machined out of a solid block of metal - in our case, usually aluminum. I expect that this is the criteria to be used at the event. Cal Custom and others made cast aluminum valve covers and oter parts back in the fifties and I expect they will be allowed. They are cast in a mold from molten metal. They are not machined from a solid block. I'm running cast aluminum valve covers so I hope they are OK. I may just throw my old cruddy chrome covers in the trunk just in case. :-)

I will say shows like this are becoming more popular as the price of gas gets higher you may have to choose between shiny and a 4 cylinder- LOL

I'm going to run a stroked Cleveland and 4 link with Halibrands. They probably wouldn't care for it.

If I have to worry about what valve covers or other small details of my ride has to gain entrance or acceptance in any show- I aint interested in going anyhow. Thats like saying only painted cars allowed- or only black cars allowed- I like old school rods but not enough to look at just them.

I don,t see any differance in this show to any other. Most shows some how find a speacial parking space for the best car, or give out trophys. This show might do that also, but i'll bet it,s not for the car with the most money thown at it. Don't get me wrong, I like shiny to. My car is in my shop now to get polished up for the summer. Shows like this make the home builder feel like they have a car that is as nice as any other. There is a place for all in our hobby, be it rich or poor.

41Custom, save your gas and wait until September and you can run over to Lancaster MA for the Ty-Rods Old Timer Reunion. It's also a one day event with a lot of traditional styled rods. Plenty of color too, not all black primer. Same flair, just a bigger and more gracious group. But if you want to go, register early because they do get full and they lock down registration.

Dons place is large enough to accept all and place all Billet cars in one section and non-Billet in another. My self I am not into rat rods but some are and that is fine. All is well since Daytona is very soon and we will attend that.

Just for the sake of touring the Garlit's museum would be worth the trip to the show.

Great show !!! Wonderful slelction of cars. I don't think there was a car on the field that could have been built from a catalog and that is, I suspect, what they were looking for. Some of us thought that they probably hit their max of 500 cars. I was there from 8:30 until about three and we had no rain. But after a few miles on I-75 we hit rain so it was probably raining by then at the show field. I took a zillion pictures and will let everybody know when I get them up somewhere.

The billet police were not especially agressive. We did not have to open our hoods when registering and some cars never opened their hoods. I don't know if they were hiding billet or they just don't display their cars with open hoods. I saw lots of cast aluminum - mostly valve covers - but that's not billet. I did notice one set of billet valve covers and several billet dash inserts for gauges. And it was not a rat rod show as some thought it would be . The rat rods were cetainly there but there were many show quality rods and customs built the old way and that's what they were seeking. We spotterd a few trailers on the grounds but don't know if the were for entrant's cars or were part of the Garlits Museum. All in all, a very good day. Everybody there seemed pleased with the day. I'll post here when my pictures are available.

I got this email from a participant....

Subject: Billetproof and trailer queens.

Message: Hey all, Like to thank Sandra for taking pic,s of our rod. I thought it was a real good show but i got to say i seen more then one car there with billet wheels, One of the car clubs backing the show had a car there with cardboard on the billet wheels to hide them but what was really sad to me was all the rods i seen that were being taken on and off trailers behind gas stations and such. What happened to no trailer queens? I can,t believe how many of what i thought were hardcore rodders putting their cars on trailers. We drove our rod up from Ft Myers and back down in the rain and we seen only one rod. They can,t all live up north LOL. Like i said i thought the show was a good one but they shouldn,t biil it as something it's not. And we are still looking for hardcore guys that drive their cars. If you see any let us know LOL. Later Jerry, Rollin Sixes.

That orange '39 Chevy 2 dr on the first page is an old friend Joe Dooley from right here in Southern Maryland. That '39 has been from coast to coast, Canada and all points in between over 30 years. 12 years ago, Joe did the yellow scallops....covered the 200,128 miles of road rash.
