I worked on a flip front end for a 57 Chevy and did it as you described, leaving the lower portion of the front fenders in place with the hood up. The basis for the hinge was from a SAAB sedan and it worked well. I custom made brackets that held the stainless side trim to the top portion of the fender that went up with the hood, so when the hood was down, you couldn't see the cut line. It was alot of work, but turned out cool. The car utilized all the components from a donor ZR-1 Corvette and we wanted the hood to open similar to the Corvette.

I looked at your webiste-is that your red '56 that is already painted? if it is, what about the idea of having the front end slide forward first, say about 6' and then flip? You could leave the Fenders alone (I hate to see those cars chopped up). As for the Electric Actuators, I know they are not the prettiest things, but we use them a lot where I work and have had very few problems (if any) with them-

Bob Hamilton at www.streetrod101.net is doing a flip front end on a '56 F100 front end. I'm sure he'd be willing to give you some ideas, check his website for email address and phone number.

He's VERY knowledgeable and willing to share info. Being a retired school teacher he has a great knack for helping people understand!

Bryant, are you planning on using the front bumper? If not you could create a simple plate which attaches along the inner lip of the front fender and goes down to the hole in the frame for the bumper iron. That looks like a lot of work in that floor pan, you must have a lot of patience
