I just swapped my Turbo400 for a 700R. Using sme cross member the trans now hits floor. Looks like the case is slightly larger than the 400? Cant lower tailshft so I'm cutting the "hump" out and redo floor. Do I goof somewhere?

Bernie,,,,,,,,stick with the 700. You'll be glad you did. TH 400 has not been made by GM in over 20 years. 700R-4 came out in 1982. The basic 700 trans exist in 2000 GMs with electronic controls.
How are you going to lock up the converter?

I agree with crazyhorse Rod Shop. The 2004R has the tranny mount location almost the same as the 400, the case is smaller, it can be just as strong.

I see alot of comments on locking up the torque converter. I assume these converters are the ones that locked up over a certain RPM. On the non electronic version, what does this mean? What affect does it have it doesn't lock up? Isn't there some fix for this? Curious.

I'm hearing the 200R cases are difficult to find. Anyone else heard the same? Should I buy a few and store 'em?

the 200's are still out there . the 200 only needs 1 ign hot for lock up or you can run it without lock up. imho it is a far better trans and tuffer. the gear split is better and it uses a clutch pack for 4th. the 700 is notorious for exploiding on the down shift from od.

we sell a very simple kit to "lock" the convertor. It wires thru the brake switch. when the brakes are applied it releases the convertor until the brakes are released and then it locks up the convertor. have one on a '54 truck with 700r4 and works quite well. Also have the 'pressure' switch type that does not require a computer, but I like the brakes switch better.

hey big d , i like to run a switch so i can use the lock up on long cruzes but around town i prefer not to use the lock up and just run a 4 speed . simple to wire. 700's are a pia.

easy enough to find out. hook a ign hot to it and see if it locks up.

driver side of box there is a 4 hole plug. looking at it the top left hole is for the lock up. put an ignition hot there. fused just in case something weird is inside but there should be a pressure switch inside to lock and unlock the converter.

If the 200's are hard to find do you mean they aren't producing them? Phoenix never mentioned they were hard to get. I also understand that 200's are only for small block applications- True/False?

you can run the 200 either way unlike the 700. test the plug and see if it has a switch in it.

The earlier 700 could be run without lockup.I had one put in enother rod to replace a 350 and found it to be about 1"taller than 350.I also was told at that time that I did not have to lock up convertor but may run a little cooler and gain a little more mileage if I did. After about 1500 miles I did install a kit for lock along with a manual switch for city and saw no difference but was told the later one MUST be lockup.I gain about 4 mile per gal with swap.
