Hey guys, I have a '39 Ford tudor sedan, standard model. It's sitting on an S10 frame. The steering gear appeared to fit in the contour of the fender at the first trial fit but after trying to fit the hood panels and get things mocked up it seems dangerously close to the fender. The car is channelled three inches over the frame. It sits well and I know I need to move the fenders about one half to three quarters of an inch forward. It will still be really close. Any ideas? Has anyone done this? Is there a shorter steering gear out there that I should be using?

just an idea maybe you could remove the gear box and its components only leaving the tierod ends. replace it with a Mustang 2 rack you could have a shop look at it unless you are a skilled fabricator and feel confident you can tackle it

If all else fails .......cheat...... On my wife's '38 we set the frame in a little too high, hence we had a similar clearance problem. As a matter of fact when all was done i had to get new springs to get it up higher, the chin was dragging on the ground. Any way to cover up the problem without re-engineering the whole suspension i ended up creating a custom license plate mount to hide the steering box. not the best way to do things but, ended up as a nice custom touch.
Still driving the wife's car, cause I am slow. [ View ] [ Email ] [ Blogs ] [ Car Ads ] Niagara Falls, Canada Charter Member since February 2005

Before altering the steering linkage, you might take a look at adding a hump or blister in the sheetmetal in the area of the steering gear. It doesn't sound like it would take too much to gain the clearance you need, and a modification like that is typically hardly noticeable when it's done. Thats what the old timers did to gain clearance around steering, air cleaners etc on the old lakesters and belly tankers. If you could add a photo of the problem area, that might help folks to come up with a better solution.
