I told a freind of mine I was into a site that had people who knew about anything. He called me this morning with a problem. Since I'm not one of those people, I'm counting on you. He has a 38 Caddy model 65. He is going to restore it. He tried to take the inside handles off but can't find a spring or pin to remove. He can't see anything to remove to get to a screw. He thinks a Lasalle may be the same. Any help would be appreciated.

There should be a horse shoe shaped clip that goes around the shaft of the handle. The clip is on the inside of the handle. Look for a slot in the handle, and then fish around with a thin pick to pop it off. Chev's of the fortys has a tool for this. I beleive that all GM's had this set up for holding the handle on.

The first thing your friend needs to do if he hasn't already is spring $20 for an authentic 1938 Cadillac shop service manual. There is one on eBay at this time with that "Buy it now" price.

brian41chevy should be correct about the nature of the clip, but there should also be a plastic/nylon rub washer the handle itself positions against. It will be necessary to push the door panel back sufficiently to see the clip and to pull it up. If the rub washer is gone or damaged they can be purchased from Motormite (aka the "HELP" rack parts at most parts houses)

He should also check the forums on the Cadillac LaSalle Club site at:
http://www.cadillaclasalleclub.org/ I don't think one has to be a club member to use the forums and a quick glance indicated there is a guy participating in the forums who is restoring the same car as your friend. For your friend's general info, 1938-1941 Caddys shared a lot of parts, including door handles, etc.
