Just purchased 1930 ford 5w coupe. Many questions need to be answered. You guys will get tired of me before it's done. One question I have is, Gauges are in center of dash,no cable from speedo to trans. How's the best way to route the cable, without drilling a hole in firewall? I thought about running it thru the shifter opening in the floor.

Gee that is going to be a tough order to fill. The cable will likely be kinked if you try to route it as you suggest. I think to avoid drilling a hole in the firewall your only alternative may be to drill a hole in the toe board right at the fire wall and bring the cable up against the inside of the firewall. Just keep in mind there has to be enough of curve in the cable routing for the core to freely rotate otherwise you'll be replacing the cable every time you hit the road.

Check what kind of speedometer you have. Is it really cable driven or is electrically driven from a impulse sender at the transmission? It would be a lot easier to route a wire than a cable

I would upgrade to an electric speedo, the cost will come back in the ability to adjust the speed up and down to match the gear ratio and wheel size.

Hey Steve, I have a 1930 5-Window. You said your gauges are in the center. Are you using the original Model A Speedo? I use the original speedo and the cable is routed thru an opening behind the gauge panel. There is a "tunnel" that ends right behind the firewall and the cable exits thru a small hole in the firewall. What is you objection to running it thru the firewall?

Believe it or not, the original speedo works fine and is accurate when connected to my 350TH. Problem is that I am always pegging it out 60 MPH, but hey, I looks original.

Go adjustable electronic. More than likely that mechanical will be way off anyway.

No problems, no fun with rods.

I disagree. The old Model A mechanical is super accurate. I use it because I like to keep things as original as possible. That is what "Restorod" is all about.

5Wcoupe.........built a many a Restorod........but they all had modern mechanics and big -little tires...sooo speedo was always off. Hello Classic in 1978, VDO, Dakota with adjustable sync. No cable, just 2 wires to pulse generator.

No two rods are alike, that is who we are.

Keep kroozen, Jim
