I plan on driving the hell out of my car this year but a little nervous of the front end hitting something here in NJ. The roads are pretty bad. I have 4 1/2 inches clearance from the ground to the front crossmember (front end/MII). The stance looks perfect, but......

Hey Al, how low is your 36? I could change to coil overs but dont want to put any more money in it this year. Anyone have anything close to this height and had problems? Thanks-

If your nose can clear one of those parking lot concrete bumpers, you'll be OK.

4-1/2 inches sounds pretty low until you realize that if you should hit an irregularity in the road deep enough or high enough to cause a contact with the crossmember you will have just trashed out one or both tires and possibly the wheels themselves, maybe even the whole damn car. Just watch the road closely and those 4-1/2 inches should be okay. Beware of tallboy beer cans......... (Grin)

Guess i'm not ok

Got about 5 inches at the crossmember on the 46 pickup. Ya gotta pay attention on a steep lot enterance. Price ya pay for the look you love. Truck has survived about 20k with no incidents ( and several trips on the backroads of Louisiana)

Anyone willing to travel the back roads of Louisiana either has a lot of guts or no sense given the fact there are parts of I-10 in Louisiana that are almost bad enough to trash a tractor trailer rig. Thank goodness they are working on it!

Tall boy can!! Good reference. No chance clearing a parking lot curb, almost took out the grill. Missed it by an inch. The springs look like they might be a little soft. Lower control arms are angled up about an inch. Maybe get some heavier springs and get an extra inch. Any ideas? Thanks for the responses-

fitzwell - Preferring to see the "real world" or the world as it was before we began screwing it up is the main reason I'll usually route a trip along the old 2 lane U.S. Highways when possible, so I guess I have no sense as well. Little traffic on those highways and most are in remarkably good condition. Also, there are still a lot of nice folks and interesting places in those towns the Interstates bypassed. Even still some Blue Plate special type Mom and Pop restaurants here and there which are darn good and you can get a really good meal for less than junk food from Junk in the Box or Mickey D's.

matt i have a 39 ford 5 window with air bag ride . matt at the highest point to cross member with air in bags wear it rides the best it is right at 41/2 inchs at the lowest it will throw sparks if you hit a beer cap with the cross member . the trick i learned with these slammed cars is to stay at least 15 car lengths back from car in front of you . that way you have plenty of time to react or slow down. i learned this back in my prostreet day's . when it would rain i would follow in the rain tracks that all my buddies would push the water aside for me . believe it or not if would work . there where no radial tires that wide like there is now day's . go low or stay home is what i say good luck and enjoy bob in ny

matt i see that you said your control arms are not straight across that will throw off the steering like that . i had a coupe years back instead of replaceing the coils i put the 1 inch rubber spacer at the top of coil spring put it where i wanted it and at a cost of 13.00 dollars and 3 hours of work and they where still there 3 years later when i sold the car . just an idea bob again in ny

my frame horns are 10 inches from the ground and I clear most everything... I haven't measured the height of the cross member but I can't get a floor jack under it...my front coils are from Eaton Detroit Springs... as are my rear leafs... my lower control arms are level with the ground...

Matt,

I have a 3 1/2 clearance and have rubbed a few times but I gotta tell you that I drive with extreme caution. We gave very high curbs in my town into parking lots and I always enter the lot at an angle and very slowly. In the grass looks great but comes with cautions. My 36 was so low at one time that with the rake that I had I kept slipping off of the front of the seat. Had to raise it up a bit but it is still low and I love it. Good luck.
