Adding a steering rack to your Mustang can be a tricky proposition. To get it right, the rack itself has to be the right length, and the mounting has to me exactly right so the tie rods will be the proper length and travel in a proper arc, or you will experience a shimmy or jerking in the steering wheel or worse, the car will dart around every time you hit a bump. Classic bumpsteer. Look for a rack that measures the same distance center to center of the inner tie rod ends as the old steering system center link. In other words, the distance center to center of where the inner tie rod ends attached originally to the center link. A safe bet is to attach the rack in the same position front to rear as the old steering linkage was located, and at the same height. You will then have to come up with a tie rod combination that will attach to the steering arm and allow for toe adjustment. I have done this sort of thing in the past and have had good luck when I made the rack to frame mounts adjustable both front to rear and up and down to adjust out bump steer. A simple guage can be made to check for it. As far as which rack to use, I would just dig through the TRW book at the local parts store and find one with a dimension close to what you are looking for and with the pinion gear on the top of the rack for rear steer, and you can go from there. Good luck, it's a tall order, but is rewarding when it's right!

before you get too involved and get a ton of money in this and still don't have what you really want take another look at your options here. You can buy a kit that was engineered to do the job right for alot of money or spend alot of time trying to make your own. Option 2 is flaming river offers a new steering box for your car cheaper than a kit and easier too install. I have used 2 of them in the past month and they make areal difference in the car. Be careful using some of the racks that mount under the hood behind the wheels the steering arms on your mustang and most other cars are too short to give you a good turning radius. The later model cars have longer steering arms on them/.
