Hello Street Rodders,

My project is coming along nicely, but I could use some help, suggestions. If you have built a Zipper, you know how tight everything is. I would appreciate your imput as to fan selection, radiator hose #s if possible, and placement of the trans cooler. (TH350) I also could use suggestions as to the best way to cutout the floor for the shifter. Any and ALL suggestions will be appreciated. This site is a treasure of knowledge.

Thanks,

Dave

Trans cooler first. I get a smaller cooler at the local discount store and make two brackets for the tailshaft of the transmission. Mount the cooler flat just forward of the back end of the transmission and up higher than the pan. Does it work? Yes, even put a gauge on the trans to find out how good and for something as light as you are building I would say you will never get to 200 degrees. Second, radiator hoses. Because every street rod is different (go figure!) it is best to get the diameter needed and the general shape, then head to your local parts store and ask them to let you "shop" the hoses until you find what you want. Most of the time you need to cut off both ends to get the shape you want. Black, simple hoses make for a clean installation. Shifter, follow the install instructions. Make the hole large enough so that the movement of the drivetrain doesn't slap the floorboards. I cut with a jigsaw.

Tex Smith owns Brian Brennan's old one (that was built in Street Rodder Magazine) and he's had to do repair/strengthening work around the front cross member area - particularly where the 1/4 eliptics mount. Material and construction spec was a bit frail for real world use it seems. Just a heads up if you plan to drive it.

Lokar has a cable shifter available. Shifter mounts to the floor inside the car and eliminates cutting a hole in the floor.

Lokar should have the cable shifter available. Six months ago I talked to them and they were ready to itntroduce it. The design is identical to the floor mounted model with a provision for a cable. The floor mount will eliminate the need for a hole other than what is needed for the cable and bolts. It will also give you a a better choice of where you want to locate the the shift lever.

David.......I assume a SB Chevy??? Hoses will be cut from larger ones from Advance Auto. Standard or reverse flow pump? Vette reverse for serp belt has smaller neck than your lower outlet. I have a 46 years of old hoses for fit up. Otherwise use coat hanger to form configuration. Get 4 or 5 close hoses. Keep receipts and labels on hoses so you can return the ones that won't work.
I am a blade guy when it comes to a fan. If you must go to electric, PULLER ONLY. 2300 cfm or larger. I think a 16" it the max for your radiator. Dual fans are a joke for your ap.
NEVER run a trans thru a radiator. I have used the finned aluminum coolers since they came out about 10 years ago. Easy to mount. Stones will not hurt them. Slender so easy to locate.
With engine and trans mated out of car, mount the shifter. Chalk the center on side of tranny. Remove shifter. Slide engine and trany into car. Chalk the center on floor......grab your 1/2' hole saw. Graduate size slowly with your saber saw.
Check with Yogi's on this site for parts.

Thanks everyone for your input and advice. The guy at the parts store didn't know what to think when I arrived with the "bent" coat hangers! LOL
