Grwing up i use to hear "Gearheads "talking about cams then I learn more about cams ,it was more technical it was all about lift and duration. so back in the day ,what was a 3/4 cam? i have one in my 327 at least that is what the guy who sold me the truck claims , if I remember this was the biggest streetable cam ?it sounds radical and it will fly.

Thats just an old word for a small cam.well lets see the old duntov sounded real bad then along came the 30-30 an it was badder neither one was a very radical cam can't remember the specs on them someone will. it don't have to sound real bad anymore to work real good,ah the day of modern techo.

Yes Dixie is right. Back in the day everyone measured cams at different lifts. Today the standard is .050, all manufactures today use it. But before some used .030,.040,.050 so you couldnt really compare one to another as far as duration and lift. Ken

The 3/4 cam term is so very general. It usually meant 3/4 race or not full race but close. The 30/30 was a Zora Duntov small block cam that had the valves set at .030- hence the name. It is much more accurate to tell your cam size but as Cris mentioned you can lose folks in the discussion if they don't have the gearhead background.

My memory is not what it used to be, but in the late 40's & early 50's, a lot of these cams were re-grinds. They were generally referred to as 3/4 or full race cams. I don't remember if they gave a spec sheet with the re-ground cams or not.

Even in the late 70"s the term was still used at least up north where i grew up in OHIO.

"3/4 race cam" is an old old term back when you didn't have alot of choices in cam grinds. Street/stock, 1/2 race, 3/4 race, full race grind. Technology has changed all that, with all the manufacturers and options available today.
