Have a problem with a VIN# of a truck I'm looking at buying. It is a '51 chev pickup fully restored, resto-rod. Looks to be VERY nice, have alot of pics and info. Problem is when I decode it. In the VIN he gave me it has 'jj' as model code, that is a sedan delivery. A 1951 3100 1/2 ton should be 'jp' model code. Did they get a VIN# off something else?? Any help ?? I don't want to upset the owner by questioning him until I get some info from others about this.

Thanks guys.

numbers are numbers. if the title does not match the truck it is a problem. the owner must be aware of it or needs to be. i would want to check the title, frame numbers. if they dont match it's worth what it weighs.

I agree numbers are numbers but to me they are just numbers. When you get in to the early cars and trucks some have been pulled out of barns fields ditches ect. with no and lost titles. That don't mean that they have been stolen. The owners do anything possible to get a title and some time it is not the matching numbers. Their is several ways to get the right matching #s, depends on the state you live in. To me if the truck was what I wanted and priced right I would talk to the owner and if he got upset by questioning him I would walk away. He will probably tell you how he came up with the title and then it is your call. Just my opinion and I am sure some or most won't agree.

if a title does not match the vin mumbers you do not own the truck. lot of folks selling titles dont seem to realize that it is against the law to alter a vin number. even removing the tag for paint is a no no. here in texas if you alter it they will impound it. i do a title search and get the correct title for the car. more hassle but it will hold up in court. something as simple as cutting the front frame off can get you in deep trouble if there was a vin number on it. some states will assign a new title but the vin will match the title. a pick up with a panel truck title is just not going to cut it here in texas. i guess we have stricter laws here than most. for me if the paper work is not right i have to pass. my 54 pu has no title but i will not touch it until i've done a title search and get one. i've had one hauled out of my shop because the vin tag was taken off and reinstalled with screws. there's a reason they use those funny rivets .

Got to agree with Shine on this. If the seller wants to sell it let him get the title situation squared away. Ron is correct that a lot of these old cars and trucks are coming out of barns and fields and have lost or no titles. However I would hate to buy something and find out that I can't get it registered because the #'s don't match. It is a little bit of a hassle for a title search, but much less than it would be if you own it and run into a problem or got it impounded.

I had a similar situation--contacted the DOT and they sent a represetative out who checked things out, filled out a form that I took to the courthouse and they issued me a title with the corrected VIN. The original tag was in place, but of the alphabetic nunbers (a,b,c, etc) was wrong. It identified the vehicle as a Bel Air and not a 210 series.

My guess is if the only difference between the title and the vin on the truck is "JJ" vs "JP", it is likely that someone along the line messed up when they wrote a title transfer. If that is so, I have been able to correct that with the state and the federal system.

If you look at the truck and you have a totally different vin than the title, most states will not license it. If the vin on the truck was listed as missing or stolen, the state will take the truck from you and return it to the owner who reported it gone. You can lose the truck and have no way to get your money back. So, make sure the vin on the truck is the vin on the title.
