I was told by the manufacture of my electric fuel pump that I had to run a return line to my tank.It is a steel tank and had ho provisions for a return. So I welded a bung for a return that I purchased from the tank manufacture. The guy from the tank company told me to be careful that I can`t just let the fuel spray in the air in the tank return for fear of static electricity.I don`t have a fuel cell which would have foam in it and would alleviate this problem. So I called the fuel pump tech and asked him if he had any advice for me on a return line and he said that I can`t return the fuel with the tube in the fuel as it will cause flucuation in the pressure .He had no solution for me. So I took a half inch tube that when inserted into the bung it extended down to one quarter inch above the bottom of the tank.I drilled 1/8 th holes down both sides the whole length of the pipe in hopes that this will not cause any restriction when the pipe is in gas.The holes will allow excess to flow so there shouldn`t be any return restrictions.I will set my float level at full not to be all the way at the top so it will always have space at the top for excess to escape out the drilled holes.I would like feed back on this matter.I will also make sure it is well grounded.Thanks.

Well I 'm not sure but I think a tube going across the top to one side should keep it going in without a problem. As long as you keep it away from the pickup line.

I will share this though, I just modified the fuel return line on my Ford diesel pickup. The return line was too close to the pickup line and it was causing air in the fuel system. I extened the return line 18" to the rear of the tank and now the truck got a little quieter. I know it sounds weird but my wife and my neighbor both commented that it was quieter.
