OK on to my next dilemma (and next set of flames I'm sure). Please see the attached pictures. The first one is a MII Power rack mocked up in my '36 Chevy. The input shaft is very close to the crossmember (5/8"). The 2nd pic is of a new TBird rack and it is even tighter (3/8"). Can either of these be made to work without interference. Can the crossmember be cut for clearance of the steering shaft? Would a manual MII rack help things (I don't know what one looks like). Please offer advise again-- Mark

I put a manual rack in my 37, looked the same as yours, It cleared with the universal installed allright, but 3/32nds to close for me, down the road a different set of headers or who knows, I might have to use a 2 piece shaft. I cut a divot out of the corner, and cut a piece of half tube at numerous angles to match the shaft direction, welded it in, smoothed it out, looks great!

I agree with 37tin. that is a perfectly acceptable and safe way to make ckearance for the steering. As He said just cut a slot out to clear and use a half pipe to fill it in and it looks like it was designed that way.

Mine is the same, the center of the rack doesn't move so there is no problem.

If there is enough room after your shaft is connected so nothing rubs, and you are happy with the way it look, I'd agree with maniac and leave it alone. It's your call.

Hold on Mark,..please reread the 1st and 2nd post!! you don't want to just cut a notch and be done with it. the integrity of the upright has to be retained,, something has to fill it back in, my suggestion was, to try and beat murphy!! been doing this stuff for a while, don't think I'm winning, but try hard. bin der done dat sorta thing......yes!! its your call......

Mine is the same way on the f-100 with mustang II. I will notch it and put in half round to keep strenght. With the rubber snubbers or what ever you want to call them it will move a bit.

Looks like 2 choices Mark, notch it and fill it or modify the mount brackets to tilt the rack higher at the back.

Good deal-- thanks for the help everyone. Does anyone have a good source or tips regarding steering universals and shafts? Mine will need to run almost 2 feet back to the steering column. I will need some kind of a shaft that will run along the frame and be supported on a bearing. MC

flaming river and ididit sells them in different lengths as well as the universals....I imagine Yogi's has them also.....if the universal clears when installed I think it will be fine.... like Ann Landers say's "If it ain't broke..don't fix it"

Thanks Al-- I'm hoping I can use the T-Bird rack because it is new and lighter (aluminum). The MII rack needs rebuilding and new boots. I will probably have to notch the crossmember a bit, but I will order the universal first and see what I've got. Agreed, why cut it if you don't have to-- I'm LAZY.
