I've been thinking about going to Bonneville this year. Has anyone gone? I don't get much time off so I want to do one of the best automotive outtings I can for what little time off I get. It might be a welcome change to just going to a car show somewhere.

Awsome place!! just to warn you it becomes very addicting and will require a yearly trip or two. The best time for the first is probably the august meet. That is usually the largest.

Go. This is something everybody should do at least once in their life - like MArdi Gras or New Years Eve on Times Square. I was there in 2001. I took my truck camper and my bicycle. Was there for the whole week. Spent nights on the salt - actually near the entrance with lots of other boondockers. The place sprawls so the bicycle was a very useful thing to have. HAd a friend running an A-gas lakester so I hung out with him. He made the record book and the 200mph club that year and that made the whole trip even more fun. And take a camera, too. People won't believe what you tell them you saw.

Always wanted to get there, Just watched a special Thursday on Geography channel, it followed several racers throughout the week. It certainly would be a great trip.

The last bastion of true hot rodders. Lots of guys from the old school when the fastest guy won. Lots of innovations like a home made intercooler, ... Loads of flatheads ... Arduns, early hemis, ... strange engines like an all-out Buick straight eight... or an immense 4-turbo diesel - loudest vehicle there - (unbelievable noise, almost frightening)... wonderful camaraderie with everybody helping everybody ... saw a small block Chev converted to overhead cams and mounted transversely in the back of a 37 Ford... and saw a GMC-blown hemi in a motorcycle. And a Ford flathead in a DeSoto Airflow. On and on and on. Ya gotta see it. Thanks for starting this thread. Brings back lots of good memories.

There's a huge hotel/casino in Wendover, just a few milesfrom the salt flats entrance. And in that town there's a car wash/salt wash. You absolutely must wash the salt from under your car when you leave. It's shocking to see how much accumulates. It packs in like snow does. A friend towed an old junker just so he didn't have to drive his good car on the salt. From the entrance to where the action is is miles.
