Hi guys i need help. Came across this situation twice lately. Installed distribtor and it sits about 1/4" above manifold. Replacing a sbc in a early Nova (front sump) took off pan and pump from existing engine, installed on different sbc, dist. is up about 1/4" above intake manifold. Looked good at old engine seemed same way with different dist, they used multiple dist gaskets. Had this same problem a few months ago with another engine called MSD and everything, had to shim under dist or use a adjustable collar dist. What do you guys think? Anybody experience this? Cant tell you brand of oil pumps but I think the shaft on the pump is a litte long. am I misssing something here? Thanks Ken

I cant believe you would put an old pump back on when you have it off. Chances are thats where your problem is -or you have a dist for a tall deck.

I run into that years ago on 64 ChevyII. A front sump setup has a shorter rod between pump and distributor. You might try Paddoc for new rod

There is also a machined adapter for that situation. comes with shims an all. I thinkit is a Mr. Gasket item. Got mine from Summitt

I have found that there is 2 lenghts of oil pump shafts, also the distributor drive gear has been machined in different sizes also. I see this problem on different sbc motors I have built. And yes it will drive you nuts. I bought a cheap HEI off the net for $50 and the drive gear cross shaft was slightly larger than a good $150 HEI, they looked so close, but when I took everything apart, the oil pump shaft would not seat in like it was designed, only touch. You can change the gear by pulling the cross pin, but its a pain.

Just another thought, after I prime a new Chevy motor prior to firing it, I put a long slotted screwdriver down into the oil pump shaft and spin it so it is facing the #1 cylinder, then when you drop the distributor, the rotor will be very close to where it should fire, you might have to pull it out a couple times and guess where you need to adjust the rotor before you drop it again, such as forward or back 1 or 2 teeth. That way the distributor hole closest to the #1 cylinder will be right on, ready to fire. An old trick of the trade !

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am just helping someone put together a buget car, if it were mine I would have bought a new pump and rear sump pan, but anyways, I think I found the problem. Yes there is a different shaft for a Chevy II pump. Owner is ordering it, hopefully it is shorter than the one that was in there to begin with because someone else installed the wrong one to begin with. Thanks again I will let you know what it is when we get the other shaft, none here on the islands. Thanks Ken

Ken, a rear sump pan will fit if you dimple the front corners of the sump with a 1" pipe. It has to be an old style pan with a single sump and not a step down sump
