Long afternoon trying to install a distributor. I've done it before but today the gremlins had their say. Here's the problem: Set the engine at top dead center mark and removed the dist. Went to reinsall a different one and the marks would not line up when the dist engaged the oil pump. Assumed I was on the exhaust stroke and turned the engine one turn and realized the dist was on the bench.

Now I can't get the dist to engage the oil pump and be in the assumed correct position for the rotor to be in the #1 poistion. It is one ahead of the normal position.

So what have I done and what do I need to do.

Jim

Put it where its supposed to be and turn the engine over until it drops down.

If you get it to drop and it is a tooth off, twist the rotor to disengage just till you feel it click into the next tooth and drop it again. You can always bump the motor around and let the distributor fall into the oil pump.
